I have Bryce, but tis not exeedingly good for designing ships. So I ask you, which one of the following should I download as a demo? Lightwave 3d's Max Cinema 4D Maya Which one? And which should I beg for for christmas?
------------------ Prime...Awacins
Lightwave is advertised as intuitive but I found it to be the least intuitive program I've ever used. I couldn't get anything done without reading the manual. Maya, I understand, is mega-bucks. Can't help you with the other programs.
------------------
get Wings. Free, easy, and no begging required, just download it. Its quite useful, check some of the ships i've made, just go to the link in my sig bout "solar System". And remember, i've oly had it for a month or 2.

Where do I download it? It looks like you've got some exillent ships there.
do a google search for "Wings 3d". Browse through the sites till you come across the right one(shouldnt be too hard), and just follow your way from there. I hope you're able to understand it and use it well.
P.S. Whhen getting started, i highly suggest checking out the tutorials. Dont do the cactus one, it didnt seem to ork out for me. But check the other ones. And download the guide thingy, theres a few more tutorials in there.
Yea, but then you just happen to need something to texture your ships with... Unless you can in Wings and I just happened to miss it...

actually, you cqan do low level texturing in Wings. Heck, its not even texturing, its just adding a colour to the faces. And if you need something to render with, well, then dont look at me, im not too good at it, but i use Strata.
Would it be possible to transfer the model over the Bryce 5 afterwards so I could texture and render it properly?
Well here's a bloody great surprise, my father has Lightwave. He has a job down here doing Medical software programming, says some people at work use it to do animations'n stuff for the software. And don't ask me what it is, all I know is its dental software. So, anyways. After starting the application, which is startlingly complex, I am forced to ask how I do anything? As in placing objects, and such....emberassed silence At least the Bryce interface was easy.

Lightwave apparantly has quite a steep learning curve, but some of the guys on the Dev Corner and Image gallery will probably be happy to give you a few tips, and links to tutorials and such. (Theres a load of lightwave users, what_is_the_matrix, pipeline, Admiral Zombat to name a few)

As flattered as I am that you think my work is done in Lightwave, it's actually done through a combination of Infini-D and Bryce

My apologies Hudson, I've edited it out my original post.
Though I could of sworn you were a Lightwave user, your works always had that Lightwave look and quality to it (if that makes any sense)

It's all in the wrist
Anyway, I take it as a compliment. Thank you.
Unfortunatly the Constitution tutorial is not compatable. I have version 7, and that's for version 5. The layout, as can be seen, is very different. For instance, I don't have a Polycon selection. Along the top of my screen are the tabs 'Create, Modify, Multiply, Construct, Detail, Map, Display' and I have no idea how this will be veiwed in 3d anyways...
This topic is really more suited for the EV Developer's Corner.
I'll just move it over there.

Thanks Slagbah, it was origionally intended as a simple request for advice, but it did go a little awry didn't it? Hehe, can anyone tell me how to reselect an object in Lightwave? I try, but nothing happens...
Lightwave, unlike pretty much all other programs on the market, is not an object based modeller. That is to say, once you create a sphere, it doesn't not remain separated from all the objects as being a sphere. It becomes a collection of polygons that are arranged in the shape of a sphere. From there, you can do anything you want with them. For instance, the fighter that I recently posted on the image gallery (it's been pushed down to the second page by now), started as two cubes. As you know a cube has 6 faces. The final product has 120000+ polygons now. It's just a simple matter of stretching the cube, using the knife, bandsaw, and subdivide tools to add more polygons, and pushing and pulling the points around until you get the shape you want.
But as for reselecting your sphere, you have three options, Selection by Point, Selection by Polygon, and Selection by Volume. I don't know what Volume is, and it's been removed from version 8 (or at least, I can't find it), so we'll ignore it. Polygon is probably more like what you're used to, so hit command+shift+h, and we'll get going. If you want a lasso tool, right click and drag. If you simply hit left click and drag, you'll only select the polys whose vertices you touch with the curser. Point selections is pretty much the same. And don't forget: layers are your friend. My latest model (not the fighter) spanned 30 layers before I condensed them all onto the 31st layer.
