Cheetah 3D

I just found this new (to me) 3D program for OSX, (url="http://"http://homepage.mac.com/mwengenm/Cheetah3D/")Cheetah 3D(/url). Downloading the demo now...

Looks alright for US$59! Is it? Has anyone else tried it?

Hmmmmm..... Maybe not...

Why not, Rodg? The gallery shots looked okay...

I think Blender may support a larger feature set. The software looked to be quite limited.

I just made a simple little design in it, and it was pretty good. Easy to use, has a few cool features...

But it's terrible with subdivision. The quality is good, but it goes so slow when you apply one to your object...

Anyway, this is what I made: (click image to see object without subdivision)

I guess it could be some kind of scoutship or droid... I dunno.

I've only been using it for about an hour, and I'm sure I haven't mastered it yet. πŸ˜› Spend some time with it and I'm sure you'll find it's a decent program.

Cool. I guess I can't really make a decision with only 5 mins experience!

I'm just used to RayDream...

This guy has been getting lessons in advertising products from Apple, hasn't he? πŸ™‚

Let's see if it really is 10.3.4-only. πŸ˜‰

Well, if you like square, angled ships, subdivision isn't a problem. =P

I'm gonna try it.

SIMPLE?!?!?!?!?!?!?! that would take me hours to mkae, and still, how'd you come up with an idea for a simple ship like that so easily? Seriously that could take me a week! It looks like an interceptor to me. I dunno why, it just does. Maybe it could be a fighter? Wich way does it fly?

Absolute ditto.

Hahaha, they're such a moron, they say that it requires 10.3.4, but I'm running it in 10.2.8. πŸ™‚

EDIT: Hmm, I think I'll stick to Strata and Wings.

I made a box, I divided it into 5x5 segments in the box properties over on the right side, I selected the "make object editable" under the objects pulldown menu, then I went into polygon mode (3rd red box) and started selecting things and pulling them out, extruding and inner-extruding faces and scaling the parts that were too big.

I screwed up a bit on one engine so I just did a symmetry to fix it.

It was really, very simple. But rendering takes forever...

Well, it doesn't matter now, because you can't save files until you register... But I'm thinking that it would make a great polaris ship. Like a Polaris shuttle or scout ship, something like that.

Here's a modified version that I made in photoshop:

You can clearly see the engines and the front of the ship.

The engines use polaris technology, but they're set up like in star trek, kinda.

well, i thought it went the other way around. And if it did, it would have made a good fighter.

I'll stick to wings :D.

Well, I tried Cheetah3D some time ago, and it seems to be based on C4D. At large parts of it look like it.
The only flaw I noticed is that I can't seem to activate any anti-aliasing (or I can't find it), and that you can't control the position of points with the coordinate manager. It only controls the position of the entire object. If is of course possible that it is a feature I simply didn't find, too. I didn't play long with it, as I am satisfied with C4D.
Anyway, it is much more powerful than other free programs I know, Mechanisto and Strate (which you can forget, as the registration server is down). Well, it isn't completely free, but I think the 60$ are worth it.

You need to go into the camera settings. I don't remember which field you need to play with, but it's there somewhere.

C4d is more fun, I agree. πŸ™‚

So was I. That's why I switched to Carrara (www.eovia.com), which is the modern-day fusion of RayDream and Infini-D. It's on the order of $300 last I checked, and besides all the new features, it can import RayDream models. I don't want to sound like I'm advertising Carrara; I just mention it often because it seems to be a little-known modeler and I haven't seen any major flaws that would cause that.

Cheetah looks good; Mac-friendly and you can't beat the price unless you include free modelers. I might try it sometime.
