max start cash

Is there some kind of maximum start cahs limit? I've run into a problem with giving a new pilot char more than 5 million credits at the outset.

The maximum number of credits that a pilot can accrue is 1610.61 Million as shown in-game. The pilotlog.txt number for that same value is 1,610,612,735 credits.

I have just verified this number using EV:Nova version 1.0.8 (Mac) with a Novatools-ResEdit chär resource set to the maximum value stated. Your problem might be due to a conflicting resource or maybe the resource editor that you're using has limited the value artificially.
In any case, the game-engine has a 1.6 billion credit limit which should be enough to buy everything offered and then some.

You could always get around it with a ränk and crön. That's assuming that there really is a 5 million limit. Can anyone confirm?

I don't see such a restrictive limit. The way the number is stored in a chär resource is a decimal long word, that can contain up to 2^31-1, around 2G, clearly enough. Try to enter the number with the ResEdit templates (if you have NT, you can tell ResEdit to open the chär with the template by selecting the resource and choose resource menu/open using template...).
