I have been messing around a bit with Nvatools and found this Mod type in the Oütf resource that make the otfit paint the players ship in a different color. How does it work exactly?
------------------
Basically you enter in a hexedecimal, and that corresponds to the colour that the game adjusts your ship to... Figuring out the correct numbers for a certain colour is quite beyond me, but there is a program called... uh, no I forget. I'll go check.

Nova paint. You can get it from the add ons area for nova. Should be pretty easy to find, and basically it has a colour wheel, you pick the colour, and it tells you what to enter into the field.
Take note however, that the paint outfit works by adjusting the colour of the base image, so often the result is kind of... flurescent. You can also get a plug in called "Paint Station" or something like that that adds some nice colours, and a place to buy them.
More random info: The paint outfit's information is stored in your pilot file, the actual outfit that gives you the colour can be removed without affecting the paint, after it has been applied.
Enjoy.

The (url="http://"http://www.ambrosiasw.com/news/upcoming/novabible.html")Holy Bible(/url) sez: (note: this is an old pre-release draft, but useful for online checks)
Modtype: it's: ModVal is: 43 paint the color to paint the player's ship, encoded as a 15-bit color value, where the bits are: 0RRRRRGGGGGBBBBB (this is necessary because the ModVal field isn't big enough to hold a 32-bit HTML color value)
If you want to put the color the 1337 way, as the template of any editor for the ModVal field is a 16-bit signed integer (and not an hexadecimal nor a binary), you'll have to make some calculations, basically, you choose the intensity of each component (red, green and blue) of the color, 0 being black and 31 full color (we'll call them RedVal, GreenVal, and BlueVal from then on), then you enter 1024RedVal+32GreenVal+BlueVal in the field. Easy, no? Well, I admit you may use the help of some app for calculation.

The 1337 way? Sounds like the really complicated way for people who get off on maths. I think I'll stick to nova paint, and take a moment to appreciate the maker's work.
Thanks everybody! I think I can handle this on my own from now on.
