Mission Computer 3.01 wont save anything!

OK, Im writing this topic because I am having trouble. I wanted to make a rapid-fire Forklift that passes asteroids. Dont ask why, unless you want a several lines long explanation. It has to do with a near-impossible mission in E1... As I wanted to get a less hard to use editor than ResEdit, I downloaded Mission Computer from David Arthurs site, david.evula.net. I downloaded 3.01 for Classic. I am using a iMac 350 Mhz with OS 9.0 and 192 MB of RAM. It downloaded fine, and I burned it on a CD-R that had other Mac files from earlier using RecordNow. When I launched it the first time, it asked me to locate the data files for all EVs. As I had several folders for each plug, I just chose one. But then it alerted that pref resource ID 128 couldnt be saved for an unknown reason, and asked if I wanted to try again. When I clicked Try again, it worked fine. Then I tried to create a new EV plug. I created a new weap resource, with a sufficiently high ID to not conflict with E1 (400). Then I put the attributes of the original Forklift, except that I made its reload 30 (I couldnt find any option to pass asteroids). Then I get the same error that the weap resource couldnt be saved for an unknown reason. When I press Try Again and open the weapon, the weapon is blank. If it set Nova Files to be none, it works. Is this because Plug-in List says Nova Templates are installed, but I dont have the Nova Template in the Nova files folder? The Plug-in List also says its version 1.06, but I still have 1.01. I guess I should upgrade and pop the template in?

This probably has nothing to do with your issue, but there is a maximum of 256 weapon types, so the highest possible weap ID that Nova will load will be 128 + 256 - 1 = 383.

I didnt know that. Endless technical details the average user doesnt know. Does this also apply to EV? I tried to do a EV plug.

On EVC it was something like a max of 32 or 64 weaps. Developing for EVC is like trying to dance in a straightjacket, relative to EVN (and deving for EVN doesnt exactly give one oodles of freedom either).
Its a detail that an average user doesnt know, but that any plugdever should know. Very first page of the Bible.

If you are developing it for EVC, the reason for no option to pass asteroids is plain and simple: that feature wasn't available until EVO came out.

Actually, using ResEdit would be extremely easy, and would not have any errors (usually; sometimes it gives me this s*** about unknown character type or something). Just duplicate the resource, change the field(s), duplicate the outf resource, change the ModValue, and bam, you've got your uber-forklift.

No, it's not a problem with files going above their set limits...

I've had this problem as well. When I'm using MC, systems won't render, outfits and weapons will save, but not before completely deleting their contents. If you don't save after every thing you do, I find that MC sort of... Chokes, I would guess is the word, and deletes things that it couldn't save "for an unkown reason".

Try increasing MissionComputer's memory allocation and see if that solves your saving problem.

The Nova Templates are installed in the MissionComputer Plug-ins folder; you don't need to install them in your copy of EV Nova.

This may sound really stupid or incredibly Mac ignorant, but I can't find the memory allotment.

I'm not sure, but I'm assuming that the way you change memory on an item is to click Command-I on the application and to click on the memory bar to change it.

There is no memory bar to change on MC Info.

What Mac OS version are you using? In Mac OS X, there is no memory allocation; in all previous versions, it should be somewhere in the Finder's Get Info window for the MissionComputer application.

I'm fairly certain there aren't any impossible missions in E1 - there are some very long and tedious domination missions though. If my guess is correct the easiest way to solve your problem by cheating (or 'tweaking' if you prefer a less emotive word) is to reduce the defence force fleets of the relevant planet you have to dominate.

And if you finally beat E1 in EV and want more of a challenge, try E1 in EVO with the Empire+ add on. Adding afterburners to fighters makes them so much more deadly (and Alien Cruisers and Fighters with afterburners are a sight to behold (if only ever so briefly before you eject!))(1)

(1) Just kidding - they are hard enough as it is.

Then I assume you are using MC X. OS X applications do not need memory allocation.

Ill try that, David. In a week.

Skippy: Im not doing the domination missions. Im doing the Alien missions which you get after the Terran Empire is gone. The domination of the planets which had the biggest defense fleets wasnt even a problem- just use Forklifts after you fingers get tired. The last Weave mission are impossible. The Alien Cruisers arent too bad, 15 Nukes and they are dust. Its the Alien Star Destroyers. This ridiculous ship is practically unbeateable. It has more shields than a Alien Cruiser, yet it regenerates shields 2.4 times as quick (100 frames instead of 240). It has 8 Alien Fighters. It has hordes of Seeker Drones from copious amount of launchers. And the thing that makes it impossible is a unbalanced beam which does 300 damage against armor. I tried to beat these Destroyers using Nukes, which do much shield damage as Forklifts, and even more armor damage. It didnt work- its shields regenerate too quick. I had to get 3 launchers, when otherwise 1 launcher is enough to destroy anything, even the Hammerhead Carrier. I got 94 Nukes, more than I ever should need. It still wasnt enough to more than drop its shields to 17%. I tried to Tractor Beam its front and fire 4 Neutron Turrets. Even the 1,900 shields and 450 armor of the Prototype Cruiser collapsed under it. I could beat it only using Forklifts while running in circles near it, because it never seems to run out of Seeker Drones. And I need to fire them so quickly my fingers get tired because it regenerates too fast. Imagine then the last mission where you have to destroy 8 ships, and that it is in a system with asteroids, so Forklifts wont hit.

I've had a similar problem. Under Panther, Mission Computer X occasionally is unable to save resources "for an unknown reason".

This is most annoying.

------------------

It worked! I increased the minimum/ recommended memory from 8192 K/ 12000 K to 12000/ 20000 K. Then I created a new weap with very few fields, because I couldnt bother type them all. Then I tried to save by pressing OK. It worked! Thanks David! Probably applications dont like abysmal amounts of memory...

I saw that your post at ev-nova.net mentioned that you increased memory allocation for OS 9. Yay! One of the changes was because of the bug I submitted! BTW, what did you increase it to? To the ones found in my post?

Any idea why MC OSX might be occasionally (but not alwasy) failing to save "for an unknown reason"?

If not for that little bug, I'd be using it a lot more----as it is, I'm mostly sticking to ResEdit. Its not worth the risk of losing a desc due to an error at random intervals.

Unfortunately, it's not kidding when it says 'for an unknown reason'; all it knows is that it tried to save the resource, but when it looked, it wasn't there. For some reason, some people have this problem, while others don't - unless your computer is running short of memory, I can't give a general explanation.

Perhaps having the plugin open in another application would cause this... Check to make sure it isn't open in Nova, ResEdit, or otherwise. Also, check to make sure it is not on a locked volume (which it really shouldn't...)
