I was putting the finishing touches on a pilot util. that'll run on mac and windows. In the process, I was reviewing my notes and was reminded that there is a significant difference in the data in windows an mac versions.
Now, I'm not talking about .plt vs mac resource formatting. The portion of the windows pilot file that stores information on active missions is significantly shorter than the same section in the mac pilot file. Everything else is the same.
This makes me wonder: have any of the window's folks experienced oddities in regards to active missions?

Hurrah! Cool! Looking forward to that pilot util. Is this the one that you mentioned that would convert as well as allow activation of pers's, or is this a converter only?

Not as far as I have heard, and I am fairly vigilent about reading people's complaints on the main board. There are alot of problems with winNova, but I havnt heard anything bout oddities with active missions. What kinda data about active missions is absent from the windows version pilotfiles? Or is it not known what each byte of the data actually represents? -Az

I fear mission data is much too complex to be understood, it's almost the sole thing you couldn't edit with seant's wonderful PFE 3 for EVO. If there are such kind of problems with WinNova (which I doubt), it would happen only if you quit the game after having taken off during a mission, then reload your pilot to see some things have changed, the mission doesn't work, etc...
I dunno to which extent the data contained in the mïsn resource of the active missions is stored in the pilot file, and if it needs to look up these resources at pilot load, but there are some thing that are decided at the beginning of the mission, and other things related to the state of the mission, that must be kept somewhere ('cause they can't be retrieved from the mïsn resource): -where you should go/ unload your cargo/ return for debriefing/ etc... -name of the special ship(s) -number, kind (if necessary), system(s) of appearance of special ships remaining -if necessary, number and system of appearance of auxships remaining -state of the mission: has accompished shipgoal? has landed on travelstel? is carrying special cargo? has failed the mission and is pending landing on returnstel?
If ever there is a problem, it can only be in the possible corruption/modification/forgetion of this data, and the information associated, when you reload your pilot file just after having taken off in the middle of a mission.

Maybe the Mac pilot files store superfluous information that could be taken from the misn resources, and the PC pilot files omitted that data. Try starting a mission and replacing the misn resource and see what changes, such as destinations, special ships, etc.

I am sorry to say the persActivator util isn't ready for testing by others; I've been busy with other concerns (PhD, house, family, etc). It will get done though. I'm putting the final touches on a revamp of the pilotConverter. The version I'm working on works on Mac and Windows.
As for the type of data that is missing, I don't know. I haven't bothered to even try and figure out the structure of active missions. In the original EV pilot spec I had it went into what was what, but I didn't see the point in figuring it out in EVO and the same applies to EVN.

blinks how then can you convert between the two formats? If the size of the active missions section is smaller in one, how do you know what parts to copy between them? -Az
The binary data that needs to be transferred is probably docmented, but that doesn't mean anyone besides Matt understand what they mean...

I stick virgin active mission data in. That way I don't need to know what the format is.
... or have a whole lot of access to said documentation.
