Is they're a way to make certain ships unfold for battle?
------------------ Prime...Awacins
Yes. Well, kind of. You can make the ship unfold anytime it fires its weapons. That's as close as it gets. Take a look at the shan for the Asteroid Miner for an example. Something that trips many people up is that the "use weapon animation" flag in weapons has no relation to the folding/unfolding animation, just to warn you.

Well, there is a way to create animations that occur when you shoot, like the Raven's two sub-beam-thingys which create the capacitator pulse laser. It can also be applied to things within the ship's structre, like side panels with guns unfolding. I don't know if you can make a ship "unfold" when there are hostile targets in the area, though...

Ships can unfold to fire their weapons like an asteriod miner, but do you want them to stay unfolded whenever they're fighting? If so, I may have a workaround for you.
Check the "unfolds to fire" option in the ship's Shän. In the shďp resource, give it an invisible (black) turretted beam with very long range that does no damage. Then, whenever a ship is hostile toward it, it will constantly fire that invisible beam and trigger the unfolding sprites.

Wouldn't that only work for AI's? If the player were to buy that ship, the player would have to use that weapon for it to activate. You could make it a point-defence gun, but then the ship would only unfold when missiles or small fighters are involved.
a related question: is there a way to get it to unfold ONLY when firing a specific weapon? (example: Ramen Scimitar from star trek unfolds to fire a theloron burst) if not, is there a way to simulate that effect?

No.
No. You can make weapon sprite appear only for a spesific weapon, but not unfold. -Az

Actually, I kind of like the idea of a user who's only job is to go around being the final arbiter of what's impossible. We do tend to go on around here...
As for player ships staying unfolded, you could use a turreted beam as a primary weapon with a ridiculously long count, couldn't you? The ship would only fold back up count frames after the target was dead, or the player broke off his engagement.

Yes but is they're a way to hide it from them? Not to mention you'd have to equipt it on every ship in the game.
Hide what?

No you wouldn't. Only the ships that you want to Unfold for Battle.
when you say weapon sprite, what do you mean? could it be done without animation? where the ship simply looks different when firing that weapon?
Additionally, is there any way to make ships unfold when they target a planet?

You could make it unfold if you put an invis PD weapon on the ship, made PD weapons target all ships, and have it do no damage, and be invis in firing. That should work, but it amy be a little absurd. Joe

No, I think that might actually be the best way. Its what I started to think about.
yeah, to do that, you would have to make ALL ships vulnerable to ALL point defense weapons, it wouldn't be practical, either in the number of rescources it would take, OR the outcome
