ok Im using evnw and am trying to create new ships, etc. Im new at all this, and the only documentation I can find about plugins at all is the bible, which barely mentions graphics. so, how do you change pictures of the ship into whatever filetype you need to have, how do you use these pictures for ship graphics, and how do you make engine glows, etc?
also, is it possible to make an effect that only occurs when a weapon launches? for example, launch a ship that would give you great jamming, or a cloak, or extra shields only while its outside your ship? or something like that...

Use a 3d graphics program. This has been discussed way too much on this board and there is atleast one topic about this on the front page of the dev board. I am short on time as i post this, so go find it yourself.
As for making epecial effects on weapon launch? Good idea, but it cant be done. You can make such effects activatable by aborting missions by using the OnAbort field of misssions and having missions with names like "Activate main shield grid" or whatever. (and having those missions be always active) -Az

how does Nova know how large a ship's shield radius is? Is it possible to make a ship with a very large shield radius and it would basically perform the same function as a ship that, when launched, provided extra shielding?

You could draw a really faint 'bubble' (ring) around the ship sprite, and then compensate for it by making a white ring the same size as the ship sprite ring in the mask. Does anyone know if that would work?
