EV New Graphics import problem

I have a Windows 2000 PC and use EV New and Photoshop. I also have looked through the Bible and EV New's Docs as well as trying to find posts relevant to this issue.

Background; I am starting with something that should be straight forward and simple. I have exported the RLED image and masks from the IDA Frigate Shan 1024. I used Photoshop to edit the ship pic and saved as a BMP along with loading and resaving the mask to match formats.

I then created a new IDA Plug by creating a SHAN resource ID 2024 for the new ship and copied the info into it from the original SHAN ID 1024. I made sure also that for this experiment I did not use Glows or light images. The basic grid is 100 x 100 pixels frames of which there are 64 or a grid layout of 6x11.

OK then I also opened a new RLED resource ID 2024 to import the pics. I set all the numbers in place to match the pic and the SHAN. Then I selected import and get the error message "Import Failed". I have also tried other resource numbers and also broken the pics into three parts to make multiple 6x4 grids. Still no joy.

I then changed the graphics format to PNG, TIFF, and PCT respective;ly to try to eliminate any problems with the BMP format. Same results. I have also loaded all pics into quicktime to be sure that as stated it had to be a Quicktime format.

Failing this I created a new PICT resource and tried to import there as well. No further luck.

OK so now my question is; has anyone else used EVNew to import graphics succesfully?

I also have another problem that may show something wrong. I have setup a plugin that has missions but no graphics resources other than copied in placeholders. This plug works on my system just fine. But when I packed it and sent it to a MAC owner that I am working with he has tried to convert the plugin with David Arthors and Arios SW converters and both of them say it is not a good file.

I know I am new to all this editing and likely am making some sort of a mistake but this is the best way I know how to learn to do these, by jumping in and doing the work. Yet that does not help getting frustrated. So please forgive this nOOb style question.

Both of the converters are rather flakey, David Aurthur's more so than the AriosSW one.
Im gonna go test the RLE import issue now EDIT: - funny, it worked for me. Opened photoshop doc of IDA sprite, saved as BMP, and it imported no problems... how strange.
You should email this report to Aprosenf.

Man, this is about where I praise w00tRalphTools for Mac.

Er.

Dave @ ATMOS

Would love to mail him Az but my mail to him is returned undeliverable.

Pipeline I would use Mac stuff but my MAC took a dump some time back and I see no reason to buy a new one just to edit a game. Yet if I had my Mac still I certainly would be better off editing a Mac game on a Mac I think.

So that is why I am even asking here instead of doing this another way. Thanks again for any help on this.

Just mailed him again and it did not bounce immediately this time so I may get through, hopefully.

Open up log.txt. It should have a specific error message printed out. If you don't have a log.txt, make sure that you've checked the option "Generate log file" in the preferences window, and then try again. Also, this is unrelated, but Nova only uses ships 128 through 895 (768 ships total), and thus only shans 128 through 895, but the RLEs can have any IDs.

The ships ID is 502 as is the Shan. The RLEd is 2024 and 2025 for the pic and mask respectively. I am not sure what the first and second errors have to do with but the third looks like something to do with the problem directly. I should have plenty of RAM if that is where the temp file is created as I have 512MB. Otherwise I don't have a clue.

I sent you an email about it. Right now, my best guess is that you don't have administrator privelages on your computer, and EVNEW creates temporary files in the system temporary file folder, which on Windows 2000 is "C:Documents and SettingsYour user nameLocal SettingsTemp". The creation of the temporary file might be failing as a result of not having access to that folder. Also, try updating QuickTime to the most recent version, although I doubt that will help.

Yes that was it. One corrupted Admin acct.. It works as it should now and my hats off for the help you were able to provide. EVNEW is a greta proggy and I am very happy that is was not your program that caused the glitch.

Here is just a peek at what I am up to...

Not to rain on your parade, but did you notice that the black "border" on the ship that makes it look good on black makes it look horrible on the light orange color? It's not hard to solve—select the ship and the area around it and blend them together and it looks good (though slightly blurry). Take a look:

Oh wait, that was an in-game screenshot, wasn't it? If so,

Yep ingame. I used the shot on Jupiter even though I knew it would show a touch of an edge as the bottem portions don't show well over a black backdrop. Not that any of that really matters much though as it is just a first attempt at editing a ship's graphics. Better stuff will happen as I learn more.
