Developement Team For Plug Wanted

Hello.

Well, I've had this plugin idea sitting in my head yelling at me (by the way, is that a good thing?) to start working on it, so, here I am.

The pluging is somewhat based based of Phillip Pullman's His Dark Materials series. The concept of dćmons and all. If anyone want's a brief explanation, I can give it. It won't be a full TC, but it'll drastically change a lot of things, like the storylines, a couple ships, and the galaxy will be a lot bigger.

So, I need a developement team (2-3 programmers, 1-2 graphics, 2-4 beta-testers for later) to help me with this. Any takers?

I've said this before and I'll say it again: people are very reluctant to commit time to a plug that is 'just an idea'. Get a decent proportion of stuff done and try again - vaporware tends to scare off graphic artists in particular.

Mazca's right, we tend to run from stuff like "Hey I just had this great Idea. I need some graphics for it." It's a nasty reality, but you need to make a fair proportion of stuff yourself before any modelers will commit to a project. Also you should probably get practice making smaller plugs and add ons for yourself to learn how to use the tools. Additionally the only programmer should be the head of the team, ie: you. One graphics guy is preferable, but at least only one for ships, and another for planets and landing scenes if required.

Basically you're probably going to get bored with this after a month. If you don't and have a significant proportion done in a few months, then someone may sign up. Until then, for testing and so on, use Nova's graphics as stand-ins.

Sorry, but really that's life. Decent graphics people are next to impossible to find, let alone convince to work for you.

"How can I make it go faster?" -Me-

From my own experience, the largest team that can possibly work is one of four members. A programmer in charge of the project, a writer who handles missions and descs, and one or two graphics people. One does ships and weapons while the other does planets and landing picts.

Even with this, you can pretty much guarantee that at least one will get bored pretty damn quick and leave. As far as I'm concerned the only things that seem to work are TCs either made single-handedly or made with a programmer/writer and one graphics guy.

My TC, for instance (which is starting to move again thanks to EVNEW) was probably about 20-30% complete (all systs, spobs and landing descriptions completed, along with half the ships and weapons) when two things happened: I upgraded to OS X, making EVO a lot harder to work with, and my graphics guy (not mentioning names) very evidently got bored of the project and was too busy. The TC will never be finished for EVO, I am now looking at remaking it for Nova as it's a nice storyline. But this time I'll make it sans-graphics until it's nearly finished.

Well, I have started working on it, but I'll take you're advice anyway. I've done a bunch of smaller plugins already (just never released them; they were my own versions of fixes and things). I very much doubt I'll get bored, I'll try back here when I've gotten a lot of thing done.

While everything said above is true, I would just like to bring up that Sephil Saga started simply as an idea. But what I did that really made the difference was write the backstory. I wrote about 8 pages of backstory for the plug, and came up with a big 'ol list of ideas for the way the plug would feel and innovations it would use. Then I posted all of that here for everyone to see. People appreciate a vision. At the time, I was working on Robotech (also an innovative plug in it's own way), but I had so much positive response that I stalled that and began work on SS.

Also, on the sidenote of team size: SS currently has about 8 members on the team, including 2 programmers, 2 graphics guys, a sound guy/auxillary graphics guy, and the balance as writers. We've been very successful so far with this large team- SS is making fine progress. So, it's not impossible- you just need a strong director and good organization. For example, we've been using a Yahoo! group for communication of just about everything between the team members. We've also had scheduled group chats on IRC, although these have been notably unsuccessful a large amount of time- getting everyone together from 3 timezones and as many countries at the same time is a pretty good trick. It's great when it happens, but not so great sometimes (like last Sunday, only one person showed- quite unfortunate.). If possible, I would say that coordination of a group is much easier when they are all fairly local (same timezone at least).

But the moral of the story is simple- even if all you have is an idea, expound on it. Draw people into your vision. Some people will say, "that's a great idea" and some won't. But very, very few people will join a freeform idea. Give it some substance, something they can latch onto. Believe me, it's worth a few hours of work.

I could do a few ships and outfit graphics. I'm planning on making my own plug-in so this will be good practice. If you give me an idea of the ships you want, I can work out some simple stand-in graphics. Later I'll go back and perfect each ship.
I can make some planet graphics, but the landing graphics require a little more time than I have right now.

If you explain your concept a little more, I think people will be more willing to sign up. After all, a good idea is better than none.

Now, i have an idea for a plugin, but i am still learning to work with EVNEW. I think it is a pretty rad idea myself. More or Less, it is an in-game walkthrough. I would
more-or-less copy EVula's walkthrough into the game (i.e after an original game mission description, another window would pop-up, explaining what to do next)

It would be pretty difficult, but what do you guys think?

To be frank, that would suck. 🙂

Walkthroughs are there to refer to if you get stuck. It would take all the fun out of the game if you were told exactly what to do to the letter.

look through a faithless eye - are you afraid to die?

Yes, I agree with Mazca.

well, it would just be for the desperate newb, or something. i am trying to think of a way so that somebody could request help. Maybe add a "Help' spob, somewhere central, that would check mission bits, and help out, or check times until next mission. I don't know.

Or maybe you could just add a walkthrough document that accompanies the download? With the prelude

WARNING THIS DOCUMENT CONTAINS SPOLIERS AND SHOULD NOT BE READ UNLESS YOU ARE CERTAIN YOU NEED HELP

or something like that. Having it ingame is BAD with a capital Baaaaaa

well, it gets to be kind of a pain to keep minimizing, or closing. It was just an idea that i was kicking around. It would (or course) be for newbies who are having trouble with something. If i made an extra spob somewhere central, it could check the mission bit, and bring up a dialouge to nudge the player in the right direction. Of course, the person could just choose not to use it, if he didn't want help.
