[ANN] RezConv - FREE .rez to Mac and back converter

Arios SoftWare is pleased to announce the release of RezConv, a FREE drag and drop utility to convert .rez files to Mac plugins (resource files) and Mac plugins to .rez files.

With such a simple interface, plugin conversion could not get any simpler - you can click the Convert button or just drag the file onto RezConv's icon to bring up the save dialog. RezConv will determine the file type itself and automatically convert to the right type. Just click save.

RezConv is a Carbon app that should run on OS 8.6 or later. It is very likely that it works in OS 8.1, I just have not been able to test it on anything other than OS 9 and OS X 10.3. Please report back if you can get it to work.

Since I obviously have been unable to test it on every plugin, please report any problems you have.

For more info and download links, see the RezConv page at ariossoftware.com:

Question: any particular place it outputs the new file to? I would assume that it automatically uses the old name and location, so that if you converted "plug.rez" in the "EVN" folder it would output it as "plug" in the "EVN" folder with a creator code of Növa and Type code of Npďf (i.e. a Nova plug-in). Did I assume erroneously?

In any case, I don't see any output at all. Would this be considered a bug or am I just misunderstanding how the application works?

—my possible bug report:)

Odd. Describe how you are using it. When launched, you should see a Convert button. Click Convert and a Choose File dialog appears. Select the file and click Choose. Then a Save dialog should appear. Save it where you want it and click Save. You are done.

Is that process not happening for you?

As for type/creator codes, you are correct except for the fact that it uses EVONE's creator code and not Nova's. This is done to encourage the use of EVONE and has no adverse effects on the file whatsoever.

I get as far as the File Selection Dialog. I select my file and nothing happens. Seems to be a bug, so if it's any help, I'm running OS 9.1. I haven't tested it under Jaguar yet.

Ooh, sneaky...yes, I'm well aware of it having no adverse affects. All EVN cares about is the type.

Yes, but if you install EVONE, you get a new one that is just as spiffy 🙂 🙂

orcaloverbri9: It does appaear to be a bug and I have a good idea as to the cause. You need to upgrade to CarbonLib 1.6. For instructions on doing so, go here:

I'm just curious, does it convert character codes between Mac fonts into Windows fonts? I.e. does "é" (Mac 0x8E) become 0xE9 on Windows?

Hmmm, no. I was unaware there was a problem with the char codes. I do not believe the official converter does that either, correct?

I was unaware of such a problem. I think WinEVN just uses the mac codes.

It is here. EVNEW Public Beta (url="http://"http://www.aznt.com/EVN/EVNEW")www.aznt.com/EVN/EVNEW(/url)

Oh right, that's true. Of course your converter wouldn't need to convert character codes since EVN uses the Mac codes anyways. I was just thinking about that because I just finished adding a translation mechanism for EVNEW so that it could display most characters in a Windows font.

Actually, I just checked my Extensions folder, and I already have CarbonLib 1.6. Which version of 9 did you test it on? Perhaps there's something wrong with 9.1 that got fixed in 9.2. Just a theory. We'd have to take it up with Apple, and we all know they're too busy supporting OS X to care about Carobon apps on OS 9 that will run perfectly on OS X. 🙂

Interesting, thats too bad, it would have been an easy fix 🙂 I tested it on the latest version, 9.2.2 I believe.

Also, do you get the same result (nothing) with every file? If you get that trying to convert a .rez file, do you get the same thing if you try to convert a rsrc file?

Anyway, if you get the same thing with all files, I can re-write that portion of the app. I am using the more convoluted of two methods of saving the file because it is more stable (for the programmers out there, I am using PostEventToQueue instead of calling the conversion function direct so as to fully dispose the Get file dialog before creating a Put file dialog). It is my guess that the CarbonLib implementation doesn't handle PostEventToQueue as well as it should.

Well, I tried it with one .rez file and that happened. Npďf to .rez? Hold on a moment...

Try #1: Yes
Try #2: Yes
Try #3: Yes

I'm really starting to think it's because of 9.1. I'll test it on Jaguar in just a sec...

Yep, works fine in Jag.

Arghh, yeah, I am not sure what else I can do. It really should work as long as you have CarbonLib 1.6.
