Okay - I spotted the posts about the keypad business in the Mage Tower (I probably would have figured it out eventually anyway), but I'm still in a jam.
Here's the thing - I'm on an iBook. No keypad. I hit NumLock to try and get the number keys to stop moving me around the room, but "6" apparently corresponds to the Escape key, so every time I try the Clear Screen option it asks me if I want to quit the game.
Grumble.
Anyway, thoughts?

You don't need a keypad to move around. The tiles on the floor were described as a "keypad" to present the concept of where the "numbers" are. Just move cautiously through the room to avoid stepping on tiles by accident. You can do this with arrow keys or mouse. The tiles on the floor each affect other tiles in the pattern below:
