New TC and I'm looking for help.

Damn it folks. Here I am with a NEW TC. I am assembling a dev team. It's Called Oblivion. Much like Titan AE, if you've seen that.Humans thrown off Earth Ships made of half working parts ect. And I need some good mission programmers, modelers and a few people to tie up the loose ends. My e-mail is dougy_n@yahoo.com if you are interested. My AIM is dougynohg7000 for those of you who want to do it that way. Thanks for reading,

You just asked for the two toughest jobs in a plug. A to of people here are making their own TC, or contemplating it, so they'll need a good reason to join another. Give out more details, tell them what you'll be doing, show preliminary plans you've made, give them a reason to believe that the plug will actually be made, rather than just becoming vapourware.

If you want a mission programmer, be prepared with plenty of plots and draft briefings.

If you want ships, built the rest of the plug first, using placeholder graphics, then get someone to built the ships once they know that everything else is ready and the plug is real. Too many start, collapse and fail. This isn't meant as a discouragement, just a bit of friendly advice and a hopefully helpful dose of reality.

Titan AE wasn't a bad movie at all...I don't see why people maligned it so. A TC is a lot of work (goodness...I'm about halfway through mine).

I'd offer my services, but I can't program or model. As well, I'm somewhat busy at the moment, but if you have any plot-related issues, I'd be more than willing to help :).

dougy_n, this isn't the best way to recruit people. Most TC's that are advertised this way go nowhere.

Also, people want to know some of the plot and the idea before they sign on.

People didn't like Titan AE because (among other stupid reasons), the CG stuff didn't have the same "look" as the traditionally drawn animation. It is a decent point, but not enough in my opinion to make it a bad movie. There are many ways to screw up the mesh between CG and 2D, but Titan AE did a pretty good job, despite that the 3D looked 3D, and the 2D looked 2D.

As for helping the plug, it sounds interesting, but I have too much on my plate right now.

So, what exactly are you going to do? If you are working a TC, I suggest a dev team of two, one programmer, one graphics, unless you have sufficient skill at both. Then, if you can't do sound, you can outsource that later in the production line.
Plugins have three major components:
Programming (misn, strn, spob, stel, etc)
Graphics (shipyard pics, ingame pice, splash screens, etc)
Sound (explosions, weapon firing, enignes, etc)
If you are asking people for all three, then you are basically doing nada.

Thanks for the advice and I am really having a bad day today so don't start nitpicking. Really, please.

To address your concerns:

1. THIS WILL NOT BECOME VAPOR WARE NOR AM I PROGRAMMING IT ALL MYSELF AND THEN RE-DOING IT!!
2. The reason for this is is that's BIG waste of time. Would you type a paper only to re-write it after you already turned it in? NO! Of course not!
3. I DO have mission plots and a vague timeline. I wanted to see if there was ay interest at all i doing these things before I took them off my legal pads and onto word. Also anybody with the cinema $D torrent from mac torrents hop on and seed it! Then i can do lots of ship modeling on my own. I just really need a mission guy, a person who can do Nova Tools( I can't for the life of me) and a tester(later on)
4. Yes, Titan AE rocks so much!!!!!

Not exactly, but at times when I have needed to produce a really good essay on any topic, I have first written it all once, then gone to school and rewritten it all again.

What? If you cannot do Nova Tools, TCs are not for you. I'm sorry, but what is it you can do that doesn't involve NovaTools? (apart from graphics).

I hope that a future EV Nova will hold the gövt-switch set expression, working like Wxxxyyy: hereby treat and let behave what belongs to gövt xxx as if it belonged to gövt yyy. This is the small tool we lack to build a believable scenario without unrelaistic amounts of resources and work.

Typing things in all-caps is no assurance and is more likely to have the opposite effect.

Err, if you programmed it all yourself, why would you have to redo it? That makes no sense and doesn't seem much of a reason to ask other people to program it.

But no-one is going to take an interest unless they can see evidence, as opposed to claims, that you're committed and have plans.

If you can't use Nova Tolls and have no intention of learning, then you're basically asking someone to make the plug for you. People would rather take their own story and program it.

Ill do graphics, but i will hold them Untill i see that the TC will actually be posted on the Nova Addons.

Brilliant. Call a (possibly) potential helper a jackass. You won't get much help if you call people jackasses every time they show you reality and have to make an inference.

Also, just what is a jackdonkey? Heh heh...

Funny how I always hear people say this. But, no. That doesn't work.

Yeah. I think a team of three works pretty well. One graphics guy, a programmer, and a writer. I've got a team of four working on my TC, but three of us live near eachother so we have no difficulty communicating, which is a problem as teams get larger.

Dougy_n, your best bet to get people to help you is to post your ideas and plot. People aren't going to sign up for a project which they know nothing about. If you post a reasonably complete description of your project then people will sign on because they are interested and enthusiastic about the ideas and plot. This will definitely help your team make it across the finish line.

  1. There aren't PMs on this webboard
  2. You're posting as an unregistered person, how could we contact/PM you anyway?
I think posting it up here would be a good idea, we've seen longer posts then 6 paragraphs..
Also, good luck on your TC!

IF you think that was a flame, you must be very new to the Internet. There are plenty of places where what I wrote would be embarrassingly polite. It was a bluntly worded list of reasons why you might have trouble getting help and suggestions on how to improve the situation.

If you want to learn, then start asking us about Nova Tools or how to built a plug. Try building a simple one tog et the hang of Nova Tools and when you run into problems, come here for the solutions. If on the other hand, you have no intention of going near Nova Tools, I stand by my comment.

Do your files include:
descriptions of governments, their their standing, relationships and goal?
outfits with brief description?
weaponry with brief description of properties?
ships with descriptions of planned use, performance and armaments?
a layout of the galaxy, including spheres of influence and any wormholes/hypergates included?
mission plots, with breakdown into groups of related missions?

These are just some of the things you will need if you want someone to do the programming for you. You can get away with having less preplanned if you are doing ti yourself, but the instant you involve someone else, you must ensure that they are given all the details they need, otherwise you'll end up working on effectively 2 different plugs.

As Martin Turner, Uncle Twitchy, and many others have shown, a dev team of one makes for the best TCs (Nova being a notable exception, but they were getting paid... and I heard were under contract...)

I have found in a variety of software dev teams, that the larger the team, the better the product. Obviously there are many exceptions to this rule, but we're talking generalizations here. Now, as far as the programming/graphics split, I think we will see, as Nova matures, that the fewer TC's are made by one person. The reason is that there is now about twice the amount of graphical work (or more) and a bit more programming work involved, too. While a team of writer, programer and artist also works, generally, I find it a bit better when the programmer and/or the artist work together to write the story.

dougy, are you still there? dougy . . . dougy?

what can i say?
look to the stars
and that between.

where are you
supposed to
be looking?

haven't seen it
yet,just all
that between.

if you are still looking co-writers i would be interested in seeing your notes. any information on Titan AE would be great as i haven't seen it and don't know anything about it. an opening/preamble to the TC would be great. most likely you'l need either one or both eventually. let me know i'm no expert but i'm getting to know my way around and looking for something with potential to work on. bottom line________ i'm looking for experience and from what you wrote about the plot this sounds interesting.
