Go West, Sez Mary... but...

Okay, I'm a bit new to the game, but I'm doing pretty well - Iced all the Cyclopses, nabbed the Eye, dragons are afraid of me, just about all but the stone creatures and the really tough zombies in that cave northwest of the Black Fairy ruins are bodies waiting for a bag. I've gone almost all across the map, fought anyone and everyone... and one little request from Mary screws me up still.

I cross the bridge. I reach the sign. I make a sharp left turn toward the trees. And.... nothing happens.

How many times do I have to bump my nose against a tree before this woman is satisfied?

Useful tidbits of wisdom are very welcome right now....

If you are on the right map, there is a path through the woods. It is approximately where the horizontal red line goes through the trees.

Hope that helps. 🙂 ~RD

Find those areas you missed the first time around. You'll want to explore those hidden areas now made accessible with Spells Expander.

Thats an...interesting map...

Anyway, just head left, it wont exactly be sharp left, but if you let yourself go down+left, you'll go straight through eventually (only about 1/2 a foot off)

You are certainly welcome to draw a better one if you wish. 🙂 With the plug-ins out and up-coming ones soon to be, we're going to need a new map eventually. Why not start now?

Well, I'll try, but a new wrinkle's been added - apparently my saved game is screwed up somehow, so it won't open, and the backup I made just after defeating the Cyclopses has a problem - I don't have the key, and no-one remembers that I defeated the Cyclopses, and since none are left to re-defeat, I have to start again, unless I can get that saved game to stop freezing as it loads. By the way, any thoughts? And don't get mad, but I'll be posting this as a separate topic (I know duplicate topics are frowned on, but htis isn't exactly a duplicate...)

By the way, interesting map. All I've got is two pieces of paper taped together, and a bunch of hastily penciled in (but nonetheless relatively accurate) drawings of forests and such. What do all the numbers mean, hey?

Also, on the subject of maps, is that something you drew on the computer, or an altered screen capture?

That's about it for now. I'm off to restart the game again. Just last night, everyone cowers before my sword, and now even those geeks in the little helmets can clobber me. Sheesh.

Thanks

Here's the deal. PoG has a problem (errrr...bug): it forgets to clear globals when you die, so therefore, it THINKS you did the quests, when obviously you didn't. Simply quit and repoen PoG. As to how RD did those (yea there are more of them) maps, I have no idea. I think the numbers come from his full map of the PoG world (check the link in his sig) where I'm guessing he got this. He was kind enough to create this map and opens it to all for free use (note that it takes away some of the fun of the game, but can be useful when you are stuck). Its kinda like Stark's Walkthough in this repect (Check out stark.evula.net if you want to see it, but again, it lessens the fun of the game). By the way, welcome to the PoG boards!

The complete map is available by clicking the link in my signature below. The red 70 is an arbitrary numbering of each square. The black 106 is the normal number of experience points available with each return to that square in the standard PoG game. The blue 59 in the small box indicates a different experience point count for the early entries. (A full explanation comes with the map notes in the link below.)

When I was at your point in the game, I found myself scribbling out drawings because the only maps available were the in-game one which is too small to be effective, or the absolutely hugh map compilation of screen shots done by ArcAngel Counterstrike. Nowhere were the cave and crypt areas given. AAC's map was too big to open on many computers and did not give any further information about degree of difficulty in each square.

I did eventually use screen shots (my own) as a guide in drawing the Rubber Ducky Sectional Map, but to keep the document size small the details of floweres, small rocks, shadows, etc. had to be left off.

CHa0s just gave you some info on saved games. I hope you can salvage one you have been working with. Let us know how it goes. ~RD

Well, I didn't actually die - I just saved the game and moved on. Now that I think of it, I didn't save the game after defeating the Cyclops as Game2 (the backup), just Game1, which as I said is dead. So I've tried the quit thing but no change, and now my guy's wandering around, and still no recognition of all that effort put into wasting the cyclopses. So, any thoughts on this?

I checked out the map website - nice stuff. Fortunately, it's not a spoiler for me as I've been across most of hte map already, and having the game map among my other stuff, I already had a fairly good idea of how the land lays in areas I haven't visited yet. I basically just like the maps to make it easier to track my location, as I assume a fair number of players do. As I said, mine are just pencil, so anything better than that (and which doesn't rub off on my fingers) is a step up.

If there are no more cyclopes around their campfire, you should be able to talk to the guards posted at the top of that peninsula, and then go to Dernath and talk first with the Mayor, and then with the garrison commander. If you have a eye in inventory, take the bloody thing to the old man in the south side of town. There is a set order in which the events must happen to get the credit for being the "long-haired savior".

Thank you. 🙂 I, too, have been over the area many times and still like to have the map available to know where I'm going next. ~RD

Edit: BTW, what ever happened to Mary Krystina's harp search?

Well, I talked to the guards - they still thought the Cyclops was alive. Ditto the mayor and everyone else. I gave the old guy the eye, and he was happy, but the mayor and everyone else still thought the cyclopses were alive. Unless I can get them to recall the rest of it, I'll have to use this save just to test strategies or something.

I don't suppose there's a way to transfer the experience and equipment a character had in one save to a totally new one, is there? As George C. Scott said in "Patton," I don't like paying for the same real estate twice.

Thanks

Problem solved. Looks like I saved that second save last before killing the last Cyclops. I just assumed they were all dead in this save, so didn't look for any. Fortunately, one just now came after me, so everything's cool again.

Any thoughts on what might have caused the trouble with the Game1 save? I'd like to know if there's something I can do to prevent that from happening in the future.

Thanks - I'm off to get that harp for Mary now.

Groovy. Was just going to suggest going to see if any were left. Barring that, a quick/simple plug-in could get you back up and running with the key so you wouldn't have to start completely over.

Doubtful. Sounds like something goofy just happened during the save, and your saved game became corrupted. Chances are it won't occur again.
