I made a reall powerful beam weapon that will be mounted on the buisness end of an alien capitol ship. I want this thing to be able to park itself in the system, aim the beam at a space station (or any destroyable stellar) and tear it apart with the beam. This would also be of interest for simulating a DeathStar scale superlaser. I set flags2 to 0x0400, but the blasted thing still wont touch the destroyable station in the system. Set the station to have 2500 strength thus making it destroyable. The beam floats over it as if it was a non-planetary weapon. Any ideas? Thanks -Az

I saw on the Polycon board at ev-nova.net that this has been already tried. And the result is that a beam weapon can't be a planet type weapon. Sorry.

Seriously? That's awful. There goes one of my ideas out the window.

Well, yes. That's why the planet destroying laser in Polycon don't look like a laser but more like a huge blaster.
Hey, that give me an idea ! Look, you make your weapon, say that it's a laser wich throw a huge burst of energy, and make the shot look like a sphere, or blaster blast, but with a very high speed. Hope i helped.

The thing is, I wanted to make a mission where you were in a massive planet destroying ship, and the only weapon it had was its planet destroying weapon, no others. And it was a big laser that didn't do that much damage, so you'd have to keep it on the planet for at least a couple of minutes. Meanwhile, you'd have a fleet of escorts fighting off a massive fleet of the planet you were trying to kill, so you'd have to do some good flying to keep out of the way of enemy ships whilst trying to take out the planet. It would be the equivalent of the Dreadnought mission in EV:O, very hard, but good fun aswell.
Looks like I'll go with my backup idea, i'll have a missile barge that carries nukes but you have to launch about 100 at the planet to kill it entirely, whilst in the middle of a big space battle. Not really as fun or cool looking though.

i think that sounds like a pretty cool idea. like STraven said, just make the weapon have a very very fast speed, but make sure the life of the weapon is really low, that way the weapon will not disapear before it goes off the screen.

I was afraid of this. I wonder what would happen if: You make your beam weapon. It doesnt even have to do any damage. You make a second invisable projectile weapon to go with it. Both are primary weapons. The projectile weapon is the planetary weapon. This has the benefit that anything that comes between a planet destroyer and it's target will get cooked. -Az

I like that idea...
The beam weapon could damage ships in the normal way, too. You just need to set up a system of giving both weapons to the player at the same time -- putting them on the same outfit won't work, since the "weapon" value is invalid in any modtype field besides the first.
How would this item be given to the player? Is it a mission-granted weapon?

not bad. complicated in some way, but nice. i've made a planet destroyer plug, which is on my Signature. try it out.
make sure you but the stellar grenades, they are what destroys the planets.
Only problem with this is that the AI isn't bound to use all it's primary weapons at once, unlike the player. In this case, if the AI is going to blow up a planet, it will just fire the invisible weapon- and that is just plain wierd. Vice-versa for normal targets.
The best thing I've found (and this is just my opinion) is to use a very fast, very rapid burst-fire projectile weapon. If you do the sprites right, it looks kind of like a beam.

Personally I alway liked the Bohemouth's method of blowing up planets... big gun, shoots at the planet and whatever's in the way gets shattered into pieces. Though for the beam-thing, you could make the weapon have an ultra-high fireing rate with a laser-section graphic... if you put 100% accuracy (non-turreted, no variation) then you should produce an effective beam weapon. Couple this with high bullet speeds and you have a very fast, very steady beam. Only have to reduce the damage-per-shots though since alot will be hitting in a short amount of time.

Beams can't hit planets? Is this a bug, or on purpose?

As far as i can tell, its a bug. No mention of it in the Bible (only that planets themselves cant have beam weapons). -Az
Okay, I've informed the beta list. Hopefully we'll get a more official answer from Matt Burch soon.

The thing that is really mind-boggling about this is that it seems that this feature was designed to emulate the effect of the Death Star- a beam that could destroy planets. Only you can't use beams. That kinda sucks...

I've actaully asked this question before (long ago), wilst I was still working on Robotech. I got an official response from mburch:
beams can't hit planets
The end. I think it has been discussed at least one other time since then.
I only mention all this because I'm very surprised that you didn't know, mrxak!
I haven't played around much with anti-planet weapons, so that's my excuse :p.
Also, the official word from Matt Burch is that it's probably on purpose.

well if anyone wants to play around, feel free to download the plug in my signature, and use the spobs inside in any plug you make, as long as i receive credit for the 56 minutes i spent going through each one to make sure they had the same dead time.
Hrm... It probably is similar to the with the not-giving-planets-beams thing... I remember in EV and EVO, sometimes beams would chew up the status bar and planet graphics, not sure if Nova does the same... If so, this is probably just a way to get around that.
