Audio Questions

I'm pretty much illiterate when it comes to knowledge of audio files and how to make / manage them. I'll just simply state a few questions for the particular purpose I'm using audio files for.

I'm working on an audio section at Dreamwave where folks can download sound files for their EV/O/N plugs. I have access to plenty of audio files already, I just have no clue how to get a ResEdit sound document into a readable web audio file. In other words, I want people to be able to listen to the sounds before they download them via preview link.

I'm going to assume that .mov would probably be the most reasonable web sound format to use. I was reading at Adobe's website that simply using a sound channel without a movie is a common an easy way for both Mac and PC users to listen to sounds. Would there be any other format I'd be better off using?

Additionally, I have no clue how to actually get ResEdit sound files into a web-readable format. I have Movieplayer and QuickTime, but they cannot read RE files. Is there any software (free) I can get my hands on to do the conversion? And if so, any tips on how to use it for the particular purpose I'm needing it for?

Live long and prosper.

I would suggest a dedicated sound format, such as .mp3 .wav .aiff or something, a .mov file is not as accessable as those, especially .wav and .mp3. I cant help you with the sound conversion utility, sorry.

Try this:

  • Create a new, empty ResEdit file.

  • Copy a single sound resource into it, and save.

  • Change its file type to 'sfil' and its creator code to 'DMOV'. This should produce a sound file that can be played by double-clicking it in the Mac OS 9 Finder.

  • Try importing that file into QuickTime Player. It can be finicky, but I have done it in the past.

Bingo... that did the trick. I had done all that before (giving the sound file its own dedicated ResEdit resource) but had no idea regarding the file type and creator code.

The file did indeed automatically play the sound when opened in the Finder. MoviePlayer had no problem importing and exporting the file... I tried .wav.

Check out the link and tell me it works for you all.

Thanks David... appreciate it.

It works. Nice fly-by. 🙂

There's also an app called SoundApp that'll convert alot of formats. It's free and good.

Have fun.
