Making explosions

Are there any good tutorials out there on making good explosion sprites? What did ATMOS use to make Nova's?

I've never used any tutorials; with a decent painting program, what I do is just draw them step-by-step, saving after each step. With experimentation, just using a few different brushes and a few shades of red, orange, yellow, and white, you can make a pretty good explosion sprite.

Other people might have better alternatives, though.

yea. Try filming a gunpowder explosion with a high speed camera against a black background. I want to do that... 😉

In all seriousness, there are tutorials, but it'd be helpful if you told us in what program you'd like to make an explosion.

I believe ATMOS used (url="http://"http://www.newtek.com/products/lightwave/product/feature_hypervoxels.html")HyperVoxels(/url) - (url="http://"http://www.lightwave3d.com")LighWave(/url)'s volumetric particle renderer.

Thank's for the link, Borb. I think that should help alot.

I'm only a dabbler in the graphic arts, unfortunately. The only 3D I know is POV-Ray (and that because it's like coding), and I much prefer Appleworks over Photoshop. My 2D guy, PysgnosisAdherent, was really, really good- but he's on a long term leave of absence, and NeonSoldier, my 3D guy, is backlogged with ships.

Really, I shouldn't be worrying about this at all- my job is to code, and code, and code.... And then write bunches of missions, and code some more...

Maybe someone should start an "Explosion Shipyard" of sorts- Nova's are fine, but I really like variety in my explosions, now that it is available.

Aye, that's a good way at actually making explosian graphics, it can just be difficult making random images of the same type of explosian for sprites (although it can be done).
