Yeah, I was playing with that, but it wasn't working as I thought it should. Thus, I got bored, and decided to sit down and figure out exactly what goes where.
It turns out, the Nova Bible is off.
To replace the cargo description (the one displayed in the mission breifings, <ct> ), use 'STR ' 9100 + CargoType Index. To get the cargo description shown on the sidebar interface ("Special:"), use 9200 + CargoType Index.
This will cause problems if you decide to use more than 100 cargo types with 'STR 's.
So, there you go... That's how you really patch 'STR ' resources in Nova.
SpacePirate
EDIT:
Yep, I just double-checked with the EVO bible, and it turns out that it is exactly the same. However, it also said that 9000 is the "generic cargo name", and I have no idea where this is used in-game. It didn't show up on any of my tests, so until proven otherwise, just use 9100.

So what I would do is create a STR resource numbered 4080 (the new STR# resource id), with the information I need in it? What about 4001 and 4002? I think I know what you mean, but I'm not sure I understand how to actually go ahead and do this.

Ah! I think I see...
Open up STR# ID 4000. Scroll down to the very bottom of that resource. Now, at the bottom, click on the ****, and hit command-k. Enter your string here. Now, take the number directly above that string (eg, "1) *****" is STR# index 1), and subtract one from it. This is the number you use for the CargoType field.
Do the same for 4001 and 4002.
If all else fails, I could email you a quick example plugin, if you would like.

I think I replied to the wrong post somehow  ignore my earlier post.

This is what I did, and did not work.

I would try this, but I can't find any STR resources, only STR# resources.. I'm probably looking in the wrong file. My STR#s are missing everything in the 9000's, too.
In the event that I find this.. what you mean for me to do is to make a new STR resource with number 9100+<insert earliest unused number here>, with the string for my cargo in it? If you could email me the example, my email address is (url="http://"mailto:katealaurel@fuse.net")mailto:katealaurel@fuse.net(/url)katealaurel@fuse.net
Okay, example sent.
I think I have you confused between STR# and STR. There are two types. STR# is a collection of several 'STR 's, all in one resource.
FYI, you can create a new resource type in resedit by hitting command-k (not for Kate... :p), and then typing the resource type in the box. To get the umlauts (ยจ), type option-u and then the vowel.
Hope you can figure out what you were doing wrong from the email.

HALLELUIAH, IT WORKETH!
SpacePirate, I used your example and entered strings 9080, 9180, and 9280, and set cargo type to 80.. tested it and, lo and behold, my ship is actually carrying books like it'ss supposed to!
In case you were curious, my practice misn that all of this trouble was for was a mission for the Inter-Stellar Library Network When I get my new homepage set up, I'll put a link here somewhere.. as I said, not worthy of the addons page
Okay, just to review (so that I don't mess up again!): when I'm making a new cargo for a misn, I create three STR resources numbered 90<earliest unused STR# id>, 91<earliest unused STR# id>, and 92<earliest unused STR# id>. Then I set my cargotype to <earliest unused STR# id>. Right? (I think that's what I did :p)
Thanks!!!
Yes, but string index.
Glad it worked!

------------------ I think that you don't see many love stories in EV simply because the engine isn't quite geared towards that. What are you going to do, keep meeting your significant other in a bar (or, with Nova, the Outfitter, Shipyard, or Trade Center) and have questions like "Will you go out on a date with me?" | Yes/No | "Great, pick me up on <DST> in a month and we'll have dinner."? -EVula
And don't you listen to these nitwits. Nova's a great game and don't let anyone tell ya otherwise. Better or worse than EVO? Who gives an african monkey's nads? **

Out of curiosity, is this board considered a good thing to bounce plugin ideas off of? If not, where?

Yeah, this is as good a place as any - you aren't going to find a bigger concentration of people with knowledge of pluging feasibility anywhere else.

Topics tend to be more on the technical side, but storyline/scenario ideas are welcome (and encouraged..).
Originally posted by Bomb: where else are you going to find as many groups of dorky people and creative people gathered in one place?
Well, my plugin idea is -exceedingly- dorky, so this must be a good thing.
It has to do with the Inter-Stellar Library Network!
(Should I stop there? :p)
See, you start out with the practice mฤsn I just had all this trouble with, getting an offer to take some books somewhere for a librarian, and getting attacked along the way by pirates looking for expensive rare Auroran history books. When you get back, you get an offer to serve as a regular book freighter in your spare time, carrying books from library to library. These raise your value with the ISLN gรถvt, and at a certain point, you get offered a mission by someone you meet in a bar who notices that you're a library freighter, to research some rare information for him. This has two purposes- it starts a spur string where you find information out for this guy, only to discover he's putting it to shady use for blackmail (you get to pick whether to help or stop him!), and it also takes you back to the main library, where the person who offered you the mission in the very beginning tells you that the library (which is not only for books, but artifacts, technology, etc.. more of an interstellar museum with lots of books and collections as opposed to exhibits) is researching an unidentified technology fragment found in Nesre Primus. It's less advanced than Federation technology, but uses different pathways and manners of working, so that, were it up to Federation speed, it would be much more efficient. After some investigating near the system, in an empty system a derelict ship that matches the tech fragment is found, and on boarding, a lot of tech and information are found. When the information is taken back to the original person, enough is there for the navigation system of the ship to be reconstructed, which points to a wormhole being in the system where the ship was found. Sent to investigate again, upon going through, a huge number of derelict ships are found floating around destroyed systems. Upon taking this information back, the person decides to see if something referred to as a "timegate" in some obscure library pieces can be constructed, allowing you to go back to when there was life in the systems to find out more (insatiable librarians, thirsting for knowledge! :p).. You're sent to the Polaris to beg some technology...
...and that's as far as I've gotten with specific planning.
I have a little more general stuff- they'll have destroyed themselves in a nuclear-war type scenario, and I think I'm going to try to work a romance in (I found your signature amusing, Bomb), although that may be ridiculous and overambitious to boot.
Any comments? (Should I put this in a new topic?)

Whenever you enter you're offered missions that let you dig through historical archives. If you accept you get more history and if you decline you leave. Like your idea. It puts a nice original twist on things. Hope to see it when you finish.

Thank you It's started now, since I have that first mฤsn, and I made my first ship for it yesterday. (Shudder, that was not fun... death to graphics..) I spun the ship in Strata to make a movie, then realized that I'd forgotten the engine flame (groan), and when I tried to spin it separately, they didn't match up, so I wound up having to group them, spin them as one movie, turn them into sprites, and then go through and delete the ship or flame in each one. Very tedious, and probably not very exact. Is there a better way to do this?
Yep.
Open up the group that hs the ship (the group you spun). Now, group everything again, and rename it to "Ship" or something (object properties palette). Now, make your engine glow sprite, and group the flame together. Call it "Glow".
Now, click on Ship, and create a new texture. Put Ambience and Diffusion all the way to 0. The preview should be pure black (I usually name it "null"). Apply this to your "Ship" group, and render the sprite. You should only see the engine glow, and it even is properly cut out where the ship will be!
After that is completed, click on Ship, then in the object properties "Texture" tab, delete the texture you just applied (The pane must be completely expanded, clck on the little arrow button). Hide the engine glow (Project palette, poke out the eye :p) and re-render the ship as the base sprite. Run m2s, and then drop the PICTs in your plug. EnRLE, and your done!

Niftiness... I experimented a little and came up with a method where I copy and paste the grouped ship/flame into a new doc, ungroup them, delete one or the other, and repeat. Apparently animations come too when you copy and paste.. it worked pretty well.
Thanks!
Another question hath arrived
I'm trying to make a mฤsn that activates a few days after the end of another using a crรถn resource. But it doesn't seem to be working. I set my crรถn to no specific dates, but with a preholdoff of 5, a duration of 31, and a random of 100 (at least for testing I need it to occur every time..). It requires the bit set by the previous mฤsn and not the one that the next mฤsn sets. But I've tested several times, and the next mฤsn never shows up in the BBS.
Also, are Mission BBS names of missions the same as the mission's name in ResEdit?
Yes.
As for the crรถns, I would do it this way. Have the first mission set some bit, and have the crรถn require that bit in the enableon field. The crรถn should have a duration of 5 days, and in the onend field, set yet another bit. The second mission will require this second bit in order to show up.
