Can someone quick tell me how I use the STR#? Thank you.
------------------ RoLLeY49
Look in the Escape Velocity Nova bible under the chapter "Patching STR# Resources"
------------------ The Evil Spoonman - I Am Everywhere, I Know All Albatross!!! "Life is to important to be taken seriously." "If there was such thing as normal, even the plauge would avoid it." - The Evil Spoonman
It doesn't make sense to me. I want to lable a ship with something other than "viper" etc. Could someone explain this to me?
Using STR#s is pretty straightforward, after you know the resedit controls. To add strings to the resoure, you need to click on the *****, and hit command-k. However, the important thing is getting the ResID's correct, in which case we need to know what resource you need it for.
Is it a Special Ship Name/Subtitle? Government comm strings? Pers hail/comm strings?

Oh, to change ship names, you have to open the ship resource. There is an included string in there, which controls the ship's short, comm, and long names. This is a huge improvement over the EV/EVO way, which is using 'STR 's
If you are using EV/EVO, refer to (url="http://"http://www.evula.com/evo_bible/appendix3.html")this(/url), which tells you what resource IDs you need to number the 'STR ' resources.
Quote
EVO Bible, same thing in the EV Bible: ** Short shipyard names 3600 Long shipyard names 3700 Really short ship names for communications dialog 3800 Independent ship names for communications dialog 3900 **
Numbers are STR ID's. Use <ship resource id> - 128 + the number displayed for that string.
FYI, STR#s are a collection of several different pstrings, all in one resource.

You know when you target a ship, on the target screen it says something like- viper, of Fed destroyer etc. What is that? a Special Ship Name/Subtitle, and what string # is it?
That would be shortname. In Nova, these are not STR's, just so you know. (url="http://"http://www.ambrosiasw.com/news/upcoming/novabible.html")http://www.ambrosias.../novabible.html(/url) :
Subtitle The subtitle to show on the target display for this ship type ** ShortName The short string that is displayed in the shipyard dialog menu for this ship type. If you want to split this name into two separate lines, put the characters "n" into the name, e.g.: "Big Shipn(used)". When using this, lines that start with an alphanumeric character are drawn in white, while lines that start with other symbols are drawn in grey. ** CommName The short string to display for this ship when it is hailed by the player. Long Name The long string to display when the player purchases a ship of this type or starts a new pilot.

Just a quick note on STR#s and STRs-(cause I know it confused the **** outta me when I first started..) STR#s are the actual strings- like a group of strings in one resource, listed off by number, whereas STRs are patches for the STR# resource.. they are one field stand alone resources.

------------------ I think that you don't see many love stories in EV simply because the engine isn't quite geared towards that. What are you going to do, keep meeting your significant other in a bar (or, with Nova, the Outfitter, Shipyard, or Trade Center) and have questions like "Will you go out on a date with me?" | Yes/No | "Great, pick me up on <DST> in a month and we'll have dinner."? -EVula
And don't you listen to these nitwits. Nova's a great game and don't let anyone tell ya otherwise. Better or worse than EVO? Who gives an african monkey's nads?

I just learned about STR and STR# myself, rolley
What you need to do is find the STR# in the Nova Data files that you would need to modify.. in this case, subtitle. I know one set of STR# resources is in Nova Data 5; there must be another one because I'm not seeing subtitles in here (although that may just be idiot me ) It could also be in the bible section SpacePirate referenced. Once you find the numbers of the STR# resources, find the earliest unused one, and create a new STR resource in your plug with that resource id. Type in what you want, and it should work!
