anywho, i run an unoffical text based RPG based on Escape Velocity, and was wondering if anyone knew of a free program that i can aquire that can edit GIF images and then save them in a GIF format, that isnt a "compuserve GIF." i need to find a program because we have several maps in the RPG that have to be kept up to date. also on a side note, does anyone know where i can find a list for the tech levels of each system in escape velocity? i thankyou for your time, and apologize if this doesnt coincide with this boards use.

You may want to ask over at Just Tech about specific programs. As for a list of tech levels, I think there was a guide on EV which had that sort of information. Checking out the EV add-ons page would probably be your best bet. If not, there's not a whole lot of systems in EV, so you could probably just check them out in ResEdit (or other editor) yourself.

Why can't is be a Compuserve GIF? I thought Compuserve was the company that created the GIF format.

You don't want to use Compuserve GIFs? What else IS there? The GIF89a format (I have the specifications on my desktop!) was created OF Compuserve, BY Compuserve, and FOR Compuserve. I quote the title page of (what I believe to be) the official specs for the GIF format:
GRAPHICS INTERCHANGE FORMAT(sm)
Version 89a
1987,1988,1989,1990
Copyright CompuServe Incorporated Columbus, Ohio
But aside from that, if you are on Windows you can edit still-image GIFs with Microsoft Paint or animated GIFs with Microsoft GIF Animator. If you are on a Mac, a quick (url="http://"http://www.google.com/") Google (/url) search should turn up with a program that does what you want.

Just download graphic converter...
It's all you need to edit graphics on a basic level, and it's one of the best graphic converting programs out there. And it's free... ish. Shareware.
Get it by searching for it.
