What exactly does the Fire Charm protect Ferazel from?

It protects Ferazel from fire, but not lava.
Once you have defeated the Fire Guardians having the Fire Charm helps (a bit) when going back to the rolling fire levels to get the goodies you missed.
It is very helpful in Ends of the Earth, especially at the very beginning.

Ashaaf - I think Ferazel 09 was trying to get into the spirit of the rivalry between you & Dr. Tall.
Ferazel 09 - I don't think any of us can impress Ashaaf, so you might as well stop trying and just be nice.

I've tried letting Salamandrakes attack me with the Fire Charm on and Ferazel still took damage so I don't think it protects him from fire balls. Could you be more specific?

Well, since someone'd do it anyway, and people with the power to take karma away (or not give it, at least) read this, I'll anwser:
To my knowledge, the Fire Charm protects you from "Ground Fire", but nothing else.
I'm going to go away now - my server keeps disconnecting me resulting in duplicate posts! How mortifying!
