I'm running into two problems. First is that when you click Info for a ship in the shipyard, the large image doesn't appear with the stats. The ship ID is 415 so I made the PICT ID 20415. Is this wrong? All the other PICTs show up fine. This has been the case for all the ships I have made.
My other problem has to do with hailing ships. When I hail a ship from a new govt I created, the hail dialoge window pops up, I hit Greetings and all it says is "No response detected" or similar. I wanted to give these ships a government hail similar to the STR#s found in 6999 through 70--. I was under the impression that only the name of the STR# resource had to match that found in the govt. But this hasn't been the case - unless I've done something wrong (wouldn't that be a surprise). So then I thought that maybe the STR#s corresponded by ID. So I subtractred 128 and added 7000 but this too hasn't worked. So basically, everything I've tried is wrong. And why I go to the bother of telling you everything I've done wrong I'm not sure. ANYWAY, I thought I found something on how to do this in the guide but trying to find back some of those scattered notes can be a pain. So, how do you assign STR#s has govt hails? Oh, and the govt hail checkbox (NovaTools) is checked in the dude resource.

As per the large PICTs- I'm not sure, but you may need to subtract 128 from your resource ID (415)- making it 20287- the reason for this is probably to make things less confusing- in the system you have, spots 20000-20127 would be empty.
And as for the hail government strings- I don't know how EVN deals with it, but EVO does it this way (and I wouldn't be surprised if EVN was the same): from id 7000- you take the government's index number (it's resource, minus 128) and add that to 7000. Then, you have the government's dude display default info (the government hail string) and it'll randomnly select from that string. So for a government of resource # 135, you'd use STR# 7007 for all of their hails.

Mmm, I'll try the PICT thing out but that's exactly what I tried for the STR#s. Looking through the data files this seems to be the case, but their are a few discrepencies. My assumption however was that this was just due to particular govts not having govt hails. But the problem it seems with these differences is that how would it display the STR# for the Prodigal Son when the corresponding govt is Hyperoid?
(edit) Yeah, no luck with either of those. Neither work.

How is it that I struggle with issues for ages and as soon as I ask the board for help I figure it out myself. As was expected, the govt STR# was the govt ID + 6872. The problem was that I had the beg for mercy button disabled, which apparently also disables the Reqest Assistance button as well as completely ceasing being able to communitcate in general.
There is still the issue of those large shipyard PICTs though. Any help on that would be tremendous.
for the picts, you have to go into the dësc resource and set graphic to whatever the id of your pict is (it doesn't have to be 20xxx, but that's what they used in nova, and it's as good a convention as any other)

I'm so glad I quickly checked that out because I was just about to stick my foot in my mouth as usual. That was the one thing I was missing. I thought about linking it there before but never did because I thought it would only link it while the text was displayed. So it seemed that because the descriptive text isn't displayed with the large PICT it wouldn't work to link it from there. But it did. Thanks a bunch. (Really should've gone ahead and tried it first, doh!)
yeah, it kinda surprised me when i found that it was handled that way, but i guess it's the most logical (there's already a place where a different pict is displayed when the text is displayed, and it's kinda cool to have the pict where this puts it, though i don't use it often)
I have a similar issue (Pict files not showing). This isn't for Nova, rather it is for the TC Polycon. It seems that for the rest of the game, the start screen pict files(?) and the radar screen picts are in the 3000s and the large picts are in the 5000s.
When I put the pict id in the description, I get a stretched version in the ship info (the rest of the game doesn't use those).
So I set the pict id to the index number at the to of ship in resedit and they show up there, but not in the yard.
