Plug-in auditor

Ok, so where is this plug-in auditor that Ambrosia keeps mentioning in text on its site, anyway? I can find no links to it whatsoever. Any info would be appreciated.

Are you looking for ResEdit? I assume your not looking for an auditor since that has to do with finances and taxes. Hold on, let me find the link...

You assume incorrectly. The Plug-in auditor, which I have since found, compares two, possibly more, plugins and tells you how they are conflicting with eachother. Therefore it audits them for you so that you can have a chance to make them Compatible. BTW, why the hell would I want ResEdit, which is a pain in the ass, when I can use EVEdit? But I have to be able to find out how to make some plugins compatible with eachother. And for that, I need The Plug-in Auditor which can be found on the following page:
(url="http://"http://www.ambrosiasw.com/Products/Add_Ons/EV_AddOns.html")http://www.ambrosias.../EV_AddOns.html(/url)

I only found this page via web search. It seems impossible to navigate to it via Ambrosia's current site. (Ambrosia web ppl, feel free to correct me if I am wrong.)

Possibly because EV-Edit is highly unstable and can do very nasty things to your plug-ins.

You have to learn, or get someone, resedit, so that you can fix the bugs that EV Edit makes. Belive me, i know...

How long has it been since you used EV Edit? Cause it's all the way to version 3.2 now. And if its been a couple version numbers since you tried it, then you have no way of knowing how good or bad it actually is.

CaptJosh

P.S. Turns out that plugin auditor only works to compare EV plugins in your plugin folder. Oh well. Maybe someone can write a plug checker that tells you what's confilcting between two plugs and offers you options for fixing it so they work together.

Version 3.2 has been out for three years now. I tried working with version 3.2 and it is still very buggy. Try looking at the dates 😉 . You'll be much better off using ResEdit. Trust me.

No I am not better off using ResEdit. I can't read hex values. I have a calculator that will translate for me, but it still doesn't help that much. I tried using ResEdit to fix a plugin at one point recently. I barely found what I was looking for, since it just happened to be text, which gets shown alongside the hex values for it. BTW, do any of you know where I might find a Keyboard layout file for a standard US 104/105 PC keyboard for Mac? Cause there are a number of keys that aren't working in my emulator due to the fact that System 7.5.5 doesn't have a layout for a Windows Keyboard. laugh if you will, but an emulator is all I can afford. I'm out of work right now. Know anyone who needs a web developer who does most of his web design and development using a text editor to edit raw HTML?

In any case, even if EVEdit is buggy, I haven't been using it to write pugins. Just edit existing ones. Like in the Kestrel Collection plug. I changed some of the numbers down. Like the shield strength. Whoever made that plug didn't realize that you can only go to 4 significan figures on the shield strength value for EVO so in putting a shield strength of 10000, the last zero got ignored. I also changed the descriptions of a couple of the Kestrels. Like the orange one. I changed the description to call it the Flame Kestrel, and I changed the description of the blue one to be the Ice Kestrel. Now if I could just figure out how to edit the Galaxy Class Override plugin to be compatible with The Babylon 5 TC plug for EVO. Or maybe I can just copy the data and insert it into my copy of the B5 plug...I'll figure it out eventually.

Ehh... you need something that's called "templates", which will tell ResEdit to parse the contents of the plug-in for you. Then you'll find everything you are looking for, labeled like the EV bible (well, if it's a flag you are looking for, you still will need the EV Bible... But things like shield values, credits, acceleration, or resource references, they will all be decimal integers). And besides the flags, you won't need to add hex values.

Do a search on how to use templates and a different search on how to add hex (if you want to play with flags).

Back in the days when I was making EV classic plug-ins, I would use multiple editiors, since each has its advantages. But I had to use EV-Edit first, always, since it introduce the most bugs, and in the end I'll use ResEdit to check everything over, since that's the one single editor that I completely trust.

If it's EVN plug-ins you are play with, use NovaTools (but still check the finished result over with regular resedit templates, cuz I rememeber there's at least one bug in NovaTools, probably related to a spob flag...).

What emulator do you use? I'm using BasiliskII, with system 8.1, and it seems to come with a default keyboard layout that works perfectly for my standard PC keyboard...
Keyboard layout should be able to be mapped by the emulator you use (if it's a decent emulator), and would therefore be independent of the version of MacOS you use.

Eh, the bugs will corrupt plug-ins regardless of whether you are writing them from scratch, or editing existing ones. I think you just happened to not have triggered the bugs yet, so that the plug-ins you are editing haven't been corrupted (or that corruption has happened, but not noticable and the plug is still useable).

I wish you best of luck in your continuing lucky unintentional evading of EVEdit bugs (-:

Simple copy-pasting probably won't work, since incompatibility between two plug-ins are due to both using one or more identical resource ID.

So say, for example, both plug-ins uses ship resource ID 128, causing them to be incompatible, if you just copy ship 128 from one plug and paste it into the other, you'll be replacing (overwriting) the ship 128 in that other plug, and you'll lose the ship that's being overwritten.

What you need to do, is re-assign resource IDs, so the two plug-ins won't be using same resources. And once you re-assign a resource ID, you have to make sure to adjust all references to that resource accordingly. Ie, if for your B5 plug, you change ship 128's ID to 582, but in one of the dude resources in B5 plug it used to have a ship 128, it'll now need to be ship 582.

This is the one and only way to resolve plug-in conflicts without losing any data in any of the plug-ins.

Best of luck (-:

That's not precisely what I meant. And it's not ship ids that's the problem. It's the differences in the position of Sol system in the Galaxy class override plug and the B5 TC plug. Not to mention that Utopia Planitia station aparently conflicts with the Io Transfer point station. What I was thinking of doing, is putting the ship, and outfits into the B5 plug, then put in the station with a new, non-used resource ID. But even that guarantees nothing. There's no guarantee that it would work.

Have you looked at (url="http://"http://w00tware.ev-nova.net/")w00tWare(/url)'s Duped utility? It's part of the NovaTools package, but there's nothing specifically Nova-related about it, and I think it might serve your purpose.

Ok, slight edit here. I note from the description of the prog that it's to check for resource conflicts in any two files. Cool.

It's just a resource utility, not particularly tied to any of the games.

Too bad it's only for PPC. All I've got got is a Quadra 650 and we all know that uses a 68k processor. Gonna have to find something else. :frown:
