...well, kind of. I was thinking about all the ship yards, and the map yards idea got me even more thinking... why not make a planet yard? (Code name Magrathea) It sounds crazy, but I think it would be cool. So I did a few basic BBEdit pages to see how it would look, and I think it's a really neat idea.
The basic idea is: I make about a hundred planets for each incarnation of EV (using LunarCell, Bryce, ElectricImage, PlanetForge, etc.) then people can download 'em to use in their plugins. Why? because LunarCell isn't free, and there's only so many times you'd want to re-download it.
Later on, (if, that is, I find time off of Caribbean and school and other "things"), perhaps I could make Bryce 5 scenes for the planets... there wouldn't be many, but they'd be classy, with attention to detail, not the 5 minutes of thrown together mountains variety you see sometimes.
So, whaddaya think?
Edit: oh yeah, anf the Nova planets would be converted into RleDs and Rle8s for those people who find getting the planets to work right with EnRle (read, me) can download 'em and plop 'em into their plugs right away.

This sounds like a great idea. When I get the Map Yard happening, we should link them together.

Mission Desc: Go to the planet Xrzyzh and kill 10 Manduvian Yerblasts. Requirements: Planet Xrzyzh defined in plug, govt Manduvia defined in plug, Yerblasts defined in plug...
Might work- if everybody just starts using generic stuff from the yards- It would be like Pick-Your-Part junkyards! Just go in, start browsing.... Hm, I like this government, and that one.... and these outfits look nice... and I'll take this universe.... and OH! that mission string is SWEET! Set a few IDs, come up with a few names for places not in your downloaded mission strings- no wait, scratch that-just use find/replace IN the mission string, and people wouldn't realize its generic... Hell, anyone could whip up a TC in a few hours! It would be great!

Too much would take the fun out of Plug-In Devoloping. We would have loads of similiar Pug-In's that only differed slightly. Shipyards/Magrathea is a good idea because it makes people with no graphical talent able to make Plugs. Map Yards I think is a great idea, and should be fully customisable, or every single Plug will have the same Maps. and I'll help and get it for my New Era thing.

I fully agree.... The whole point of shipyards was to help connect those with graphics experience with those good with resources, two skills that don't always occur in the person. Going overboard with 'yards would be impractical if not simply misguided. I like the Map yard idea as well, but only because that would take out a whole hell of alot of work that I don't really enjoy doing. But outfits? Missions? weapons? That's the fun, and in Nova, easy, stuff. No way I want someone else to do it.

Very good point. I think some of these ideas would just be better off when contributed to some type of team project, rather than having people throw what they're good at out onto the Internet for others to use. We want creativity here.
Still, there are times when people abandon projects and they go to waste. That's what I want to create a Scrapyard for.

If we want to take this all the way, why not have plugin yards! Oh, wait. We already have that...
The Scrap Yard is an interesting idea. But people might get upset if they find out that something they had worked hard on and had high hopes for was transformed into something dodgie.

"something dodgie"? The Scrapyard was an idea to have all the vaporware and old bits of rubbish be thrown together into a hodepodge where people could take a look at and use.
What I meant was that someone might get upset if they handed over their vapourware plug and someone else ended up using it to make a very crappy plugin. But I guess if you felt that way you should have just finished your plugin.

Yeah, I was thinking of ideas of what could be done in that case, but I suppose that answers the issue. It could potentially be a big issue, however, so I think I'll implement some type of approval system where the original developer has to approve the use of his/her work (maybe through some kind of contract). An eBay-style rating system might also work, though that would require more scripting than what I have to do already (I'm planning on automating things as much as possible, so that I don't have to maintain the Scrapyard so much, because high maintenance would result in having the Scrapyard become vaporware itself).
would result in having the Scrapyard become vaporware itself
How ironic
You could just have a disclaimer saying that if you submit your work to the Scrap Yard then you no longer have control over what it gets used for. And there's nothing to stop someone from going back and resurrecting their vapourware.
You might want to have rules about giving credit where credit is due...

Yeah, I really hope this repository for vaporware doesn't become vaporware, it would be a shame. I suppose if that happens, someone else can start a Scrapyard, and I can dump this there...

(Okay, this is straying slightly OT, but I felt I had to do this...)
A Scrapyard is a great, great idea. A really, really great idea. I've always thought that that was something that was sadly lacking in the EV world. But, hey, if you don't believe that someone could make a good scenario out of vapourware, or that the site would probably become vapourware, you should check out this:
(url="http://"http://marathon.bungie.org/orphanage") The Marathon.Borg Orpanage(/url)
A great example of how this sort of thing could be implemented. If any of you out there are also Marathon freaks, like Moi, the great (perhaps greatest?) scenario for M :redface:o/AO, (url="http://"http://www.marathonrubicon.com") Rubicon (/url) was made partially out of the bits of other dead scenarios.
Think about it, guys. Plugins, especially TC's and the like, go belly up every week. That's mainly because few have the right amount of luck, dedication, and skill to follow the tortrous path of TC making to it's final conclusion. That's not a bad reflection on people, it's just that the real world has a nasty habit of getting in the way of the virtual one.
Normally, these plugins just end up mouldering on the computers of their would-be makers, until finally they are deleted, and all the work and occasional genius that went into their work is banished from the world forever. Which is a terrible shame, in my opinion. With the right amount of encouragement, and a proactive administrator, (Which is very important. People are lazy. You have to not be. It's a good rule of thumb) The Scrapyard could become something very special indeed.
Okay, I think I've rambled enough today. To the doubters, your work is unlikely to be used to make crap. I haven't seen a example of this with the Orphanage, and I doubt I will. Oh, and while I'm at it, (url="http://"http://www.thedarktide.net/")The Dark Tide III(/url), a in-progress (url="http://"http://www.df-21.net")Dark Forces(/url) project, has a very good example of this also. So there you go. That's my two cents, anyway.

Hrm... well, if I manage to get this thing working, will you put a link up on the shipyard?
Originally posted by Mantaray: Hrm... well, if I manage to get this thing working, will you put a link up on the shipyard?
Do you want it to be hosted by the Shipyard itself (such as Eeun's Shipyard or Saber Studios), or will it just be hosted on your evula.org account?
Either way, I'll certainly list it on the front page, under the Network Shipyards heading if it's hosted on one of my domains.
