ph33r this weapon!

Since I recently made a post on the gallery, I didn't want to make a new one but I have an unignorable urge to show this off.

What do you guys think? It's supposed to be a gatling railgun, and obviously the individual railguns are not supposed to resembled the ones in Nova. Tips, opinions, and criticisms, please!

The central cylinder is way to shiny, tone it down.
In general, metal is not that polished, so its not going to give nearly as clear a lightspot or reflection.

The central cylinder needs to be smaller and the rails need to be closer to the middle. I think if you added a base it would make it look better.

You know, i don't understand the reason for the gatling style rotation. Modern cannons can move bullets in and out of the chamber faster then a gatling style rotation thingy.

It's a little too shiny(i think that was already mentioned), there are too many objects, not a smooth barrel. That may be ok for a railgun which uses magnets, but railguns look better more open. And why do you always have that ocean background? It is distracting.

------------------
"...For what we see now is only a shadow of things to come..."

I don't like the ocean background ethir.

Thugh I do like gatlen cannons; everybody knows that something that rotates is cooler. Like in Andromeda, the enourmous planet assult robots have triple 10 barrel gatlen cannons that all revolve around a central point in the arm, and then also spin. Those are sweet when firing.

Anyway, It needs a base, and less shinyness. I think I'd be better as some kind of gatlen laser. Those don't look like things a bullet could go through.

The central cylinder is supposed to be large; it's a piston counterweight to dampen recoil. The background isn't ocean, it's just blue. It's a default scene with the ground removed. Many people, including myself, find it easier to work in Bryce if the ground is removed and thus out of the way.

As a railgun, it is actually a highly accurate and practical design. Modern railguns actually do look like mine, with two tracks surrounded by donut electromagnets. Unlike conventional bullets, railguns do not need an airtight barrel. Remeber, even in the wide railguns in Nova, the shot is fired between the rails, not in or on them. Also, the cylinder is necessary because railguns are the worst victims of Newton's Third Law. To excel even a 10-ounce slug to 40000 feet per second over a distance of twenty feet requires a huge amount of force, a force that is exerted equally back on the gun. That's why handheld railguns are impracticle, and a vechicle-mounted version with dampeners and shock absorbers is the way to go.

As a Bryce user myself, I find it easier to turn atmosphere off, as well as no haze and no fog. Set the background to black, and it looks like empty space with no stars.

Gatling guns are actually faster. If you have two guns, each firing at a certain number of rounds per minute, it is twice as fast as one gun. Thus the more barrels you have firing, the faster you can spit out death and destruction.

Case in Point:
Machine Guns: Single Barrel 600-1200 RPM (7-12mm)

Gatling Guns (M61-A1): Multi barreled (5/6)(?) 6000 RPM (20mm)

Correct me if my stats are off.

The rotation of the barrels is the point. Even in today's super fast fire rate, the barrels get hot and need to cool down. Multiple barrels allows the gun to be fired longer.

To explain a little differently: a gatling gun, in a nutshell, is a single machinegun with more than one barrel. The reason is that while the firing mechanism can cycle bullets at an incredibly high rate, the heat generated by the friction of the bullets would melt a single barrel. A gatling gun treats each barrel as a slower firing machine gun, giving the barrel more time to cool, but as a different barrel is cycled for each shot, it can still fire at its highest firing rate. Which poses a question. Would you have a gatling gun style rail gun, or would you simply have multiple railguns? If a railgun could cycle its slugs faster than the rails could recharge or whatever, then you'd need it to be gatling, but if the gun could only cycle at the same rate, or slower than the rails can recharge, then to achieve a higher firing rate, all you need is more guns. More guns is more bulky than a single gatling gun, which is why "Kelly" Johnson designed the F-104 with a gatling. He wanted the 104 to be the fastest fighter on Earth, so he kept weight to an absolute minimum, which included going against the standard of putting multiple guns on the plane. The gatling could achieve a firing rate similar to that of multiple guns, but was much lighter. If you simply need more railguns to get a higher firing rate, then they should probably not be on a gatling type mount.

In any rate, I think that you have too many barrels, and everything is too shiny. It looks a bit strange. Try reducing the number of barrels to say 8 or 6. Having that many reduces the size of each individual gun, making each one look smaller, and less formidible. Also, take out some of those torus on the barrel. They make it look like there aren't two rails, and instead just an interestingly shaped tube. What's the point of having that central cylinder if it's not going to support the barrels, and keep them from torquing off their mounts? That's why gatlings have that cylinder down the center, it's there to support the barrels and keep them from twisting when the gun accelerates.
