What's a good graphic program that's free??

I'm going to try to get this one in first!

Problem with free programs, is they seem to be awkward and harder to use. No experience behind this, since I have never used megabucks programs like Strata or Bryce.

If you remember, how long did it take you to go from downloading the program to making your first ship or thing?
By the way, very cool work.

It wasn't long at all, if you count (url="http://"http://www.squibix.net/mech-ev/about/shipyard.gif")this(/url) as a ship; beyond that I can't remember exactly; I'd say it was maybe a month (of working with the program--I left it alone for a while) before I was able to make (url="http://"http://www.squibix.net/mech-ev/artimages/scout.jpg")this ship(/url).

Aw, you beat me to it!
Megabucks? I admit, not much compares to the tiny footprint and non-existant price of Mechanisto. It'll run on anything, too. But you can find Strata and Amapi free and Bryce and Ray Dream used for less than a hundred bucks. And they don't require a G3 to run.
Going up the scale are the true mid-range programs. Out of them I've heard good things about Animation Master and Cinema4D. I got Carrara myself, as an upgrade to my older software. These are a couple hundred...less than a new monitor.
There are lots of options without going to the Maya stratosphere (and even the new Maya for OSX is actually pretty cheap, as high-end softwear goes!)

My first experiences with Povray scared the **** out of me, frankly. It seems to take quite a lot of time to actually work with it, I suppose. I've looked at it since then, but I'm just not that kind of dedicated person I guess.
A free program, eh? Mechanisto seems to have gotten some good reviews, but I don't think I've really tried it much to say either way. I'm a Bryce user now. Not a great Bryce user, but I'm getting better.

Well, not on a 68k; you'll need a PowerPC. But I don't think that'll be a problem for anyone making plugs for Nova.

POVRay might be tough to start out in, but with a couple days' work, I was able to make the images on (url="http://"http://www.AmbrosiaSW.com/webboard/Forum56/HTML/001128.html")this(/url) thread. True, it took me two years of on-and-off work (and countless attempts) to get to this point, but I must say that the rewards for all the hard work are extremely gratifying.

Oh yes. I am quite aware of capabilities of the program. Quite excellent in the right hands. However, I'd prefer to spend my time working in a GUI. I like to see vaguely what I'm working on before it's fully rendered. Some year or two if I have a lot of time I might give it another go, using what I know now about "stuff", but I just don't have that kind of time in my life yet.
