New Syst and Spob But Not on Map

I've tried the search feature guys and now to here:
Developing a plug for EVN. Using Res Edit. New Syst allocated. Added a Spob to it. Two way link between an existing Syst and my new Syst also done - i.e. each points to the other.
Prob is that Syst won't appear on the map. Co-ords are okay. Tried same Govt as the existing Syst as well as -1. Have tried a new pilot too. Have tried buying an outfitters map in the existing Syst and that should cause the new Syst to be shown.
I can put the new Spob and its Desc into an existing Syst fine.
So, what am I doing wrong?
Please help. Thanks!

There's a very small chance it could be located right underneath an existing system... try using slightly different coordinates, then report your findings.

Is there anything in the Visibility field?

Three Rings for the Elven-kings under the sky,
Seven for the Dwarf-lords in their halls of stone,
Nine for Mortal Men doomed to die,
One for the Dark Lord on his dark throne

Nothing in the visibility field. I've double check that the Con and Nav fields aren't around the wrong way and moved the syst cords. I can rename the existing system which shows that something is happening. All other plugs removed. any help appreciated

What version of Nova are you using?

Are you using the templates or NovaTools?

Does your plug have Npďf and Növä in the two fields (forget what they're called)?

Edit: Fun with the edit button!

Maybe it's far far far off the screen.

Make sure you have the right number for your s˙st and spöb -- for instance, if you're using NovaTools and you've got the Index Number button checked, make sure you're using the Index Number for the linked s˙sts and spöbs, rather than the Resource number.

Have you tried getting a debuglog file to make sure the systems are linked properly?

It is better to feed the goat than it is today.

Assorted replies:

  • Using EVN 1.0.2
  • Using NovaTools 1.0.0 with last ResEdit direct from Apple website
  • Syst is not way off map. Can see spob anywhere I choose to locate in a preexisting syst.
  • I'm not getting the Resource and Index numbers mixed up.

I really hoping one of you will pinpoint something stupid that I've done. I don't care to say how long I've worked in IT on a professional basis but long enough to get really really really frustrated by problems such as this. I'm probably looking right at the error/bug/whatever now and not realising it :frown:

Here's a thought. Is there anything in the Visibility field of the existing system that you're hooking into? If so, is that the version of the system that is currently visible?

That was quick Slagbah! Saw you were logged in so was sweating on your ideas 🙂 Yeah, visibility field in the existing S˙st is empty.

Look, I wasn't wanting to say much about my plug but here goes. I'm trying to link a S˙st to LPAD. New S˙st cords are x=100 and y=-30. so no prob. I've copied The LPAD S˙st for the new one and cross referenced them. LPAD is only defined once in the Data Files. The S˙st Res ID I chose was 769 which is high but safe. I've also LPAD in the plug as the Con fields of both S˙st need to be updated. I've tried different Res IDs and linking to other than LPAD.

Hopefully one of the other forum regulars will help out 🙂

What does the debuglog say about the s˙st? (You know about creating a debugging log by creating a text document in your Nova folder with the name debuglog.txt, and then running Nova and quitting out of it to get your info, don't you? If not, you do now. Very handy.)

Ummm... perhaps you misspoke or perhaps it's your problem, but LPAD is a spöb, not a s˙st. (What s˙st is LPAD in, anyway?)

You've created two new systems. But are they connected to anywhere else? I doubt you'll see systems that are unexplored, even if you 'close' to them.

EDIT: aaahhhh.

Worked for me. Here's what I did: (url="http://"http://home.attbi.com/~slagblah/systtest.hqx")syst test(/url).

I used s˙st ID 790 for my new system. Hooked it into the Tidbinbilla system using your coordinates. Showed up fine with no problems. Didn't put any spöbs in it, but that should work properly once the system is on the map.

Are you using any other plugins? Have you tried another s˙st ID?

Slagbah: I'm at work now but I'll try out your file at home. WinXP setup here :frown: and a superior setup at home :D. Many thanks.

Yep, a typo crept in in my postings. Of course I meant Tidbinbilla. For the curious its located in the Australian Capital Territory and is a deep space research centre with several dishes: (url="http://"http://www.cdscc.nasa.gov/")http://www.cdscc.nasa.gov/(/url)

P-Psycho, Mantaray, Uncle..., et al recognise you all and many thanks for the ideas.

Can't wait to see where I went wrong. Gotta be something really DUMB! I'll let you all know what went wrong.

Thanks all. Problem solved. I had a look at the slagbah plug. Seemed fine. So I went to my plug. I created a new S˙st anew, linked it to Tidbinbilla and voila! So where did I go wrong. I don't have an old copy of the s˙st to compare so I'll never know (in a moment of pique I trashed my S˙st component last night!!!). Thanks for all your effort everyone.
