If you want to simulate the 6-years time debt of an Hawking travel in EVN, simply give EVERY ship an "Hawking Propulsion Drive" outfit that adds 360 days to each hyperspace jumps: then make "jump-routes" that are 6 jumps long... When you arrive at your destination you will have a 6-years time-debt.
------------------ -signature in development stage; please wait-
I thought of that outfit idea...but i was too lazy to look in the bible to see if you could make the amount of hyperspace travel longer. and if it is possible then that's a good plan...what do you think curwen?

Curwen smacks himself in the head
Why didn't I think of that...
It would of course mean that the time-debt would depend more on what type of Hawking drive you have and less on the actual distance you have to travel. It's less accurate... but definitely FAR more appealing than making tons of identical missions.
Yep, I say we go for this. Definitely better than my idea.
(I really should go and read the EVN Bible, huh?)
I think we should all read it...it would help out or brain storming a lot.
I've made a start putting the (url="http://"http://homepage.mac.com/cell23/hyperion4evn/ships.html")ship list(/url) online.
I invite everyone who's interested to take a look and send in comments, because it's still far from complete, and I may have made mistakes. I've tried to more or less group the ships according to function and size/firepower. Not all the ships mentioned are in the books, I've been filling in some blanks in the list and will probably come up with more stuff in the near future.
Lists of worlds, governments etc. will follow. All of the above will apply for these as well.
Ideas for storylines are also welcome, of course - though it's stil a bit early to start working on those.

I think that that looks pretty good...i can't think of any other things to add at the moment...
OK. I've already compiled a list of about 50 Hegemony worlds from the books, and we can probably add some stations and Ouster "worlds" too... Problem is that very few systems are ever mentioned by name, so I'll have to improvise a little here. Same goes for the other 150 Web worlds and the rest of the Hegemony (Outback and Protectorate).
Too bad TomWoozle's galaxy creation tool has been put on ice for the moment, it would have come in quite handy... :frown:
we could use some of the ouster systems mentioned in the 3rd and 4th books. if your already doing this...o well it was worth a suggestion.
i was just thinking about who people could play as and i was thinking...we should have a char resource and you can choose who you want to play as...FORCE, Ouster, ect...i was also thinking that a cool person to be would be an "observer"...although in the series there is only one there could be others. as an observer you would have to have quite a few restrictions since potencially you would be so powerful...i also think that once you beat the game you should be able to be the shrike...evil grin

I was :). I think we can safely assume that the average biosphere startree - or even a modest orbital forest - takes longer than two centuries to grow, so...

Yep, this was already agreed upon earlier.

You mean like the second Keats cybrid? I don't think that would have to be a very powerful character, but within the limitations of the Nova engine it might be a bit boring to play as since you get everything secondhand, rather than taking an active part in the story (except at the very end)... I don't know. Maybe I'm getting this wrong - if so, please clarify.
But I definitely agree that it would be cool to include some kind of "rogue TechnoCore cybrid" chΓ€r.

That wouldn't exactly guarantee interesting gameplay, since you'll be able to do just about anything without the slightest effort... IMO the Shrike should remain something of a wildcard in the game, something to fear - not something to be...
But perhaps you could be given some kind of biotech enhancements, like the liquid armor and faster reflexes Kassad gets when he goes with Moneta to the future... Finishing that particular mission could kind of turn you into the future opponent of Rhadamanth Nemes in the next part of the story, Ε la T800 vs. T1000 in Terminator 2...? (Mental note of that filed away, for future use...)
best, Curwen
i mean that guy A. Bettek (sp?)...the observer in the last two books...you could do some special missions were you have to watch people or something...i donno just a thouhgt.
A. Bettek the android was a alien observer observing the human race, frequently seen in the latter 2 books, but also in the former, I believe he ferried the group down river on hyperion in the original, but not much else was said about him
Sorry about taking so long to respond but busy irl atm, the Hyperion TC website rough draft should be up soon

Ah, I forgot you were working on one too. Never mind, I haven't been able to do much lately either. I'll hopefully have a list of the worlds & systems in the books made into HTML soon, and we can move that and the ship list there (or combine it with what you already have).
I don't have very much, I was just planning on putting up a decent looking page and incorporating the differnet lists, progress reports, screenshots (eventually) and other things into the site later after their done. If you want to do the site thats pefectly fine by me, as I just decided to do it because I hadn't read anything about anyone else wanting to take it up, but I'd be happy to do it if you want and/or provide the space on my mac.com site
Well, I'd already put some stuff on my own mac.com account; if you haven't yet made anything, we might as well keep it there for now. If we run out of space, we can split it up. (And I can also spare some megs from my ISP-provided webspace if necessary, so no worries there)
The (url="http://"http://homepage.mac.com/cell23/hyperion4evn/ships.html")ship list(/url) hasn't been updated yet, but I just added a list with several dozen (url="http://"http://homepage.mac.com/cell23/hyperion4evn/worlds.html")planets(/url) (all the ones I could find in the books so far) and several (url="http://"http://homepage.mac.com/cell23/hyperion4evn/planetscenes/")Bryce scenes(/url) which I made at work when I was bored and Big Brother wasn't watching me
I also made a convenient (url="http://"http://homepage.mac.com/cell23/hyperion4evn/")home page(/url) - well, more or less. It's just a few bare links for now, but it'll serve.
The scenes are not 100% accurate (don't know if there are tree-like plants on Nevermore, Mare Infinitus colors are not quite as described in the books, and I can't remember what Lusus really looked like - can't be bothered to look it up again right now, either). Anyway, just take a look and let me know what y'all think of it.

very nice landscapes indeed...i never was very good at those...you really seem to have it down
As the others have said very nice bryces
And to the planets list, it might be interesting to have a little history cut-scene beginning which has the disapearance of the earth and the explanation of why it supposedly happened, and possibly another small cut-scene showing the terraforming of heavens gate from mud hole to a good looking planet. Just some ideas
bows Thank you gentlemen
In the meanwhile I've found three more planets and a system name (think I got 'em all now, I won't keep going through those books anyway). I'll update the list asap.
Also, I have some new suggestions:
1. We now have a couple dozen planets, but the books explicitly state that there are about 200 Web worlds alone...
I hereby invite everyone who reads this to make a contribution and come up with a world. In the best EV tradition, obscure references to other SF works are welcome, and a little humor is also appreciated (but please don't overdo it; and keep it consistent with the overall atmosphere of the books, that's all I ask).
2. There's very little mention of system names. Travelling mostly by farcaster, I guess the name of the solar system you're in isn't very important anyway... and we agreed to make traditional space travel not too easy... So I suggest giving them all just a "NGC-<insertlongnumberhere>" designation; we can later give some inhabited systems the name of a star, but I personally don't care much about the astronomic accuracy of this plug...
And now for something completely different:
3. So far, nobody but us three has stepped forward to contribute to this TC. While I prefer working within a small group, I'm beginning to feel increasingly uncomfortable about bumping this thread back up all the time, when it's obvious that its relevance to all the other board members is minimal, to say the least. (just look at how many different people have posted in this thread... it's almost become a private discussion)
Perhaps it would be best to take the development-related discussions elsewhere, and only post general requests (as above) and maybe some teasers here. I recently came across Ikonboard, which now also offers free hosted forums at (url="http://"http://myibmain.ikonboard.com/")http://myibmain.ikonboard.com/(/url) and it looks pretty interesting to me, since I can't afford to set up a server myself and my ISP won't let me put up a BBS on my private webspace. I haven't checked out the details (limitations etc.) yet, but maybe we can give it a try - it's certainly more convenient than using e-mail or irc IMO. Would be a good place to keep a progress log & stuff like that...
Any thoughts on this?
(This message has been edited by Curwen (edited 05-25-2002).)
i think that if we just set up a little email group we could do this with quick ease. One email sent...it goes to everyone that is developing...IMO this would be easier than a webboard of our own.
