Can I make a three-way random decision split, or is the feature limited to two choices? Thanks for any help.

I think it's limited to exactly two choices........ Maybe you can nest them.

Frandall once said that you can only have two possibilities in a random choice in Nova, "unless you were very clever". Nova was not yet out back then, though

The way Nova is set up, you should be able to do almost anything if you're clever enough. Just look at the stunts people pulled with the EVO engine, and go figure...

Exactly, "almost anything." Heh. Well, apparently I'm not clever enough. I could do two different two-way splits, but that wouldn't give each possibility a 33_1/3% chance. :frown:
Edit: Another idea: Could I make the "fourth" option restart the random decision process? Or can't I do that?

Not immediately, but you could make the fourth option be a start of a mission, that is silent and auto-aborting. When it aborts, give it an identical On(Abort/Fail/Success) field (whichever one an auto-abort triggers), that may create the same mission again. Eventually, one of the three other paths will be chosen, and the mission will stop regenerating itself.
In theory. I haven't tested it myself. Let the board know how you fare. I, for one, am curious to see if this idea would really work.

Sounds good actually. You have to leave the spöb if the mission is gonna auto-abort though, right? That's not optimal (acceptable even). I'm thinkin that I'm gonna end up just making it a 50-25-25% decision. :frown:
Edit: Unless... I can't create an invisible mission that begins and ends on the same spöb without taking off and landing, can I? If I can do that, my problem is solved...I think.

To the best of my knowledge, no. In EVN, many things revolve around the player taking off from the planet. The game saves when the player takes off, the player embarks on missions after he/she takes off. While (I think) you can manually abort missions before taking off, the auto-abort only works after the player leaves the planet.

That's what I thought. Oh, well... :frown:

On offering a 33% chance path split...easy...
you can do this one of a few ways...
1. Have the player choose his path. I.E. say at the end of a Desc "That leaves you with one of a few options...you can either go to (Spob A) (Spob or (Spob C)
then when the player lands on one the mission bit that allowed either of those three missions is immediatyl set so that no backtracking can take place...
2. Make the next mission have a 20%or below availability...all three of them. Then when the player accepts one you have a bit go off that means none of the other two may be accepted...
3. Change the engine. (Kidding kidding)

Yeah... I was looking for a invisible, non-player made, auto-starting (i.e. started by another mission) three-way split. I guess I can't do that. :frown: Thanks for the ideas everyone!
In Nova the auto-abort will work immediately. Set TravelStel and ReturnStel both to -1. If you set ReturnStel to -4 you have to leave the planet before the auto-abort takes place.

Randomizing...hmm...
I have been, for an EVO TC, looking at alternate ways for the player to create an input. Instead of yeah/nay for a mission, choices of when and how to complete the mission (for instance, running a shipment of arms...do you turn it over to the cops, continue to the repressive government that hired you, or turn around and sell it to the rebels?).
Invisible missions makes this sort of thing cleaner. And EVN has more options via those lovely NCB's.
But there is a very interesting multiple-choice possibility in EVN... "Space-Captain Fred, the Consortium has decided to vote for a new leader. They've set up a temporary voting booth in the Outfitters. Will you go there and cast the deciding vote?" You arrive at the Outfitters, and instead of bombs and turrets you see nothing but pictures of delegates. When you click on one, you see a brief description of a party platform (plus a tonnage and a price, both zero...I know; does look a little odd).
After you purchase a "I voted for Jeremiah Gilgamesh" -- which appears in the Player info for a short time -- you leave. The voting world visbits back to something other than Special Tech Levels, a whole hog of missions are triggered by the presence of a "I voted for Gilgamesh" outfit on your ship, and the first such mission you take removes that "bumper sticker" from your ship.
You can see similar possibilities, I'm sure...the first to use an experimental hyperdrive, the personal choice to use weapons of mass destruction (which causes others to follow), etc...
A similar trick can be worked in the EVO shipyards. I'm figuring out the details now for use in my (someday, someday.....13% complete and counting) TC.

Really? I thought I read somewhere that the auto-abort was triggered by special ships or somesuch like that... If the auto-abort works as you say it does, my problem is solved.
Edit: I knew it! Straight from the Nova Bible... "Note: there must be special ships associated with the mission to trigger the auto-abort." However it also says: "an auto-aborting mission, which will automatically abort itself after it is accepted." Now I'm confused. Could someone shed some light on this? ------------------ "Turn the middle side topwise, topwise." --Bart Simpson Isaiah 28: 8: Yes, all the tables are covered with filthy vomit, with no place left clean.
