Bryce animation

Does anyone know how to get a picture in Bryce to spin, like needed to make it a sprite for a shan resource?

😕

Look at the lower left corner of the Bryce Interface. There you will find the "Swap" button that changes the bottom row from selection tools to animation controls. The basics are done there.

Bryce is a basic "keyframe" system. Here's how to do it; move to a top camera and get your ship pointing 0 degrees (north). Make sure the time line is set at Frame 0 and click the key to add a frame. Move the time line first, to frame 8, rotate your ship clockwise to 90 degrees (east), and click the key again. Note that the frames from 0 to 8 are now filled in with green.

Do the same thing at frame 17, 26, and 35 (Bryce counts from frame 0, so 0 to 35 = a 36-frame animation, each time rotating the ship 90 degrees. You probably need to open up the "Set up animation" window to change preferences from SMPTE count to frame count.

Now play the animation, using the transport controls. If it looks good, render away (using "Render Animation" from the menu). It does not matter what your fps is, as you will be converting it to a sprite. By the way, I prefer to render as PICT sequence and use "p2s" (in the Nova tools Sprites folder).

What I've done (which is even faster), is simply "set as keyframe" the first frame (0), then scrub up to frame 35. In edit mode, use the rotate tool (toroid thing) to rotate your ship 350 degrees clockwise (it will show you on the left of the screen how much it's rotating). Check to make sure it's working by scrubing back and forth to see the ship spin. Now you just need to render animation (movies work well), pop it into a sprite using the proper NovaTool, and you've got your sprite.

"Toroid." Sorry. "Torrid" is hot and steamy! Yah, that is what I was using to rotate. The four keyframes were because of a nasty habit Bryce has with rotations over 180 degrees; it tend to take the shortest route. I lied a little, above, to simplify; I've been doing 360 degrees to frame 37 then deleting the last one after I render. I will have to try the two-keyframe thing, tho, as may be smoother as well as faster.

Oops, typo, my bad .

I've only had the problem with it taking the shortest route when you input the rotation manually, and not using the toroid thing. shrug

Thanx, I figured it out.

You can still enter rotation values in the popup menu as long as you rotate the ship manually past 180° first. This was useful when I wanted a ship to end its rotation at 354.375 degrees (for 64-frame spins). So you can rotate the ship manually to 350° and then enter the fine-tuning in the menu without worrying about Bryce short-cutting the animation. A quick Q about shans: will the Weapon sprite show up whenever the ship fires a normal (spacebar) weapon?

Using Bryce to Scam Free Hardware

I taught myself to animate movies in Bryce 5, including ship sprites and other neat effects, like planes taking off and whatnot. My dad thinks my (primitive) movies are so great he's thinking about getting a faster computer for me to do it on!

Shouldn't be. Should be able to simply bank the model (setting the controls to Model Space) then rotate normally (with the controls set to World Space).
