Need some ideas

Okey I think this is correct board to post this on since its EV related.
I'm currently making an Arena remake and I'm wondering whether I should use the origional EV ships or should I use different ones (I used graphics from the sites on the weblinks page, I can't design ships), but they're currently very crummy. Any other advice would be appreciated.

That would depend. I, personally, would like to see a different version out for every plugin as well as one that combines ship from plugins of similar classes. What might work well would be an Arena shell which you could throw extra plugins into for different ship combinations. I was considering creating one nearly two years ago but the idea never went down. I'd still love to see it happen but I've got NR in my care and I need to finish that first. The first thing you should do, if you're making a remake, would be to incorporate the original ships from EV. Then you can work a bit harder and add plugin ships, your own ships, and maybe even ships from EV:0. EVN might make a better platform for an arena-type game but it's complexity would make it take longer. Still, an interesting concept. Somebody was working on a project that would put the original EV ships in the Nova graphics format, complete with all the bells and whistles that Nova has. I forgot who that was but their graphics would make a kickass nova Arena plug.

The reason I posted it on the EV webboard is because all the people on in the Developers corner are more interested in EV/N and I thought I would get a better response on the EV webboard, but if EVula says it should go in the Developers Corner, he 'must' be correct. <mutter> stupid *&^% messing up my posts grrrr </mutter>

There is plenty of interest in EV Original here. I, for example, am developing an EV expansion right now.

As for your idea: I think using original EV ships is probably a better idea, but you wil need to make your version notably superior to the current version of Arena for EV if you want people to care.

Well, by rule of thumb, posts about EV plugin development are put here. However, since you do have a reasonable enough point, I wouldn't dismiss the idea of re-opening the other topic, if you think it necessary.

Bump, could somebody give me some advice??? Please??
I knew nobody in this board was interested in EV. coughcough*

Jeez, people have given you advice. The first few posts are advice for you, then you started complaining and created a digression.

If you're going to make an arena plugin for EV, then it had better be way better than the original or else no one is going to want to play it. I don't think, however, that anyone has made an Arena plugin for EVO, and definitely not for EVN. My suggestion would be to work in those games.

However, if you are bent on making this plug for EV, then making new (better) graphics would be a good way to go.

Okay. So far what I've thought of is this.

An gladiatorial arena was created by the Confederation for people who wanted to test their combat skills. It is also used for convicts and Rebel partisans who are send to their deaths in full view of the public (I.e sending them up in defenders against rapiers). It is also used as a propoganda machine. Stripped down Rebel ships are destroyed by upgraded Confederation ships to show the public how pathetic the Rebels are. There are 3 tournaments as well as fights organised from the mission computer, the amatuer, intermediate and expert gladiatorial competition. There are, however pirates who decided that plundering the Arena and all its industrial and agricultural colonies (all jump routes have been sealed off, so there have to be planets which build ships and maintain the Arena's ever growing population) would be more profitable than fighting among each other. There are also rumours of Rebels. Convicts who escaped death and Confederation dissidents.

I'm thinking of mixing origional EV ships and weapons with some I've found. Tell me if you think what I've thought up would make a good plug, and if not, tell me what I should do different. Thanks in advance

Zax.

What's the point of asking people's opinions of your ideas if you don't wait long enough for people to answer?

Okay, maybe there's room for a little turning back 😛

I like the idea, there's actually a plot behind the Arena, which I believe that the original was lacking. I think that I might actually go back to downloading EV plugs for this.

I was going to make some suggestions, but then I realized that you aren't developing for Nova.

I'm not developing for Nova for 2 reasons.

  1. It's my first major plug, and I want something simple
  2. I haven't registered nova (yet) so I couldn't test the plug.

I do understand. Nova is much more complex to develop for than EV - I still haven't got round to fully exploring Nova (I'm still slowly working on Intelligence, my EV expansion plug).

On the other hand, Nova's complexities would make an Arena plugin so much more interesting. Not only that, but as far as I know, no one is doing that sort of thing for Nova, yet.

Okay, here's my final idea.

The Rebel systems will be unavaidable until you do their first mission.
The avaidable ships are as follows. If they're unique to Pirate planets, they'll have a 1 next to it, unique to rebels, 2 and unique to Colloseum planets, a 3 (p.s on Rebel planets, you can ONLY buy rebel ships).

Defender,3,1
Manta,3,1
Hawk,3,1
Patrol Ship,3,1
Galaxyfighter,3,1
Lightning,3,1
Rapier,3,1
Corvette,3,1
Destroyer (mod aargosy one),3,1
Dragon Frigate,3,1
Confed Frigate,3,1
Rebel Cruiser,3,1
Antonida Dreadnought,3,1
Dreadnought,3 (only after certain missions)
Antonida Freighter,1
Rebel Hawk,2
Rebel Destroyer,2
Rebel Freighter,2.

There are 15 weapons (including a secret weapon), 18 outfits (2 unavaidable to purchase, given to you after a mission).

Each major ship design company will have a station in a neighbouring system to the Colloseum, you can accept missions to sabotage their nearest rival's convoys.
There are no mission strings for pirates, but you can accept a drug-smuggling mission (pays well, but the government you're smuggling drugs into will hate you).
The Colloseum mission string contains 3 tournaments and some anti-pirate missions (since the Rebel systems are hidden, you cannot do missions to destroy them.
The Rebel Mission string consists of blasting Confeds and Pirates, and some double-dealing.

There's one pirate system in Rebel and Confed space.

Okay, that's it, any commets, suggestions?

I think that your idea for the arena is pretty good. There's only one thing that I sincerely hope that you do before releasing your plug: RUN SPELL CHECK. Bad spelling and grammar seriously detract from the quality of your plug.
