Initially, you will have two options: CSG (via spheres, cylinders, boxes, etc.) and meshes. Both are very tedious and fragile. However, if you can get the hang of the Bicubic Patch, you will suddenly find that keyboards turn to gold when you touch them.

Huh. I wouldn't have included meshes as a viable option unless you're importing from some triangle based program, and I would have substituted blobs for bicubic patches in the above statement... On the other hand, I haven't tried to work w/ bicubic patches at all, yet. Do you have online something to show what you've managed to do with them? Alot of the stuff on my homepage (link below) is done w/ metaballs, so you can see some of what I've managed to do with metaballs.
I should really start tinkering w/ isosurfaces sometime soon.
