Simple spöbs questions

What's the difference between the rlë8 and the rlëD?? Besides some of the names, they have the same RID and same appearance.

And where are the planet weapons at? (the weapons planets use, which file, can't find them)

The rle8 and rleD's are different in that the rle8's are only 8 bit and the rleD are 16 bits. I am pretty sure that this has to do with the quality of the spin. Higher the better, as far as I know. I think that the planet weapons are in the weap file. Which ones they are, I am not sure. Hope that this helps.

rleD = 16 bit = EVN

If you don't have both, EVN will crash when you enter a system.(i.e. only rleDs and the plug is being played at 8 bit)

A planet can use ANY weapon type(I think). You just enter the RID under the Planetary Weapon slot on the spob editing screen.

rle8 is an 8 bit sprite, meaning that the spin can have up to 256 colors (we're talking binary here. 2^8 colors = 256)

rleD is a 16 bit sprite, meaning that the spin can have up to 65536 colors. In other words, your sprite will have better gradients, and can allow more detail. It's generally more important on the larger sprites where more detail can be seen.

It's good to do both because someone running a slower machine will have a much harder time running rleDs than someone running 1GHz dual G4s.

For a bit of clarification, spďns have absolutely nothing to do with rle8 and rleD. For that matter, neither do shäns. rle8 and rleD are for sprites.

Spďns and shäns are similar, except spďns are for weapons, planets, asteroids, etc, while shäns are for ships only. Since you're asking about planet sprites, spďns are the way to go. They can use pict sprites, as well as rle8 and rleD, so you don't have to convert them if you don't want to. Just keep in mind that Nova likes rle8 and rleD a whole lot more than pict, and probably uses more memory when you use pict sprites.

Just clarifying - both rle8 and rleD are Nova-specific; neither EV nor EVO uses either of them.

196 and 198 are the two common weapons used by planets. They are "enormous", which makes sense for a planet.

Yes, however rle8 = 8 bit which was used in EV/EVO. Sorry for not being a clear as possible.

Anyone know if there are any advantages to using rlë* over PICT? Obviously syntax put them in there for some reason, but anyone know what it was?

They display faster and use less disk space - probably less memory too.

If you use PICT, Nova will automagically convert them to rlë* format before displaying them, thus taking more memory, more CPU, and more time.

Yes there is an advantage..... your computer will crash when you enter a system with a non rle8/rleD graphic.

Probably not (I haven't tried it yet), but what probably happens is that your computer runs out of memory as it tries to convert the pict to rle.

It's not a memory problem, I have a G3 iBook, 256K ram. That and I allocate extra memory to most my applications.

It is better to use rlë8s and rlëDs anyway, whether it crashes or not. Just drop your PICTs/spďns into EnRLE and you're done (sort of). It's very easy.

Yea. Making them into a rle is no biggy. It'd be simpler just to do it that way, rather than worry about how it'd work without it.
