Templates

How does one use the templates that come with the bible?

Are NovaTools and Templates, mutually exclusive?

Am I supposed to create the mission using the template and then edit with NovaTools?

I'm confused...

Also:

Why in the templates is there no place for setting bits onShipDone, but in NovaTools there is?

NovaTools and the Templates are a little different. NovaTools is all you really need, if you have that you don't need the Templates. However, if you're running in OS X and so don't use ResEdit, then you use the Templates. In NovaTools, you can create the resources and edit them. With the templates, you can also create the resources and edit them. It's just a little more work with the Templates to edit them coherently (because you have to keep looking up numbers and such). If you have NovaTools, you don't need the templates.

Where is onShipDone? Is that a ship resource property? If so, look at OnPurchase. That might be what you're looking for. Since I don't use NovaTools, I'm not sure what onShipDone is, but my best guess is the OnPurchase field.

First of all, to use the templates you must open them in ResEdit and copy them into your plug-in. If you don't know what ResEdit is, it is a resource editor; to learn how to use it properly, you can get a small guide on ResEdit (url="http://"http://www.ambrosiasw.com/cgi-bin/vftp/dl-redirect.pl/ResEdit Documentation.sit.hqx?path=evo/guides&file;=ResEdit Documentation.sit.hqx")here.(/url)

No.

From this question, I can tell you don't know anything about ResEdit; follow the links I gave above. Eventually, when you figure out how to use ResEdit, you can get a guide to making simple plug-ins, such as a weapon, (url="http://"http://homepage.mac.com/cafall/.cv/cafall/Public/Plug Dev Guide.sit-binhex.hqx")here.(/url)
I hope this helps.
(edit)Or maybe you already know what to do, in which case you can ignore me. šŸ™‚ (/edit)

This is an ncb expression in the misn resource.

I had been using NovaTools only, and most things worked. Everything in fact except the onShipDone and onAbort fields of missions. I asked here what the problem was, and someone said to get templates and try again. I have now done this( I figured out how to use them, but thanks Aranor) but I still have this problem. So my new question is: HOW DO I GET BITS TO SET WHEN A MISSION ABORTS OR A SHIP GOAL IS COMPLETED?!?!?! This has been driving me crazy for a month now, and I cannot figure out what I did wrong. I look at missions in the main scenario that do these things, and work, and I do the same, but to no avail. Someone please help!!!

Ok, after looking in the misn resource, here's your answer:

OnAbort is there, in the place you'd expect. It's near the bottom, but it's grouped with the other bit set expressions.

OnShipDone is out of place. It's very near the bottom, away from the rest of the ship goal stuff. It's below the other bit set expressions.

I hope this helps.

You dont actually have to copy the templates, they only have to be in an open window in resedit for it to use them. If you open the templates, then open a plug, you can edit the plugs resources without actually copying the templates

My suggestion to ALL beginner plugin designers is to start with a prelim plug for say EV or EVO. They're a whole lot easier to edit than EVN because there are less resources. While they're more limited, there's just less confusing junk to sort through. As they say: "Back to the basics..."
