640x480 Conversion

All right as you see by the title I am currently working alone on a conversion so that the people running under the smaller resolution then 800x600 are still able to see the important things such as prices, and weight.

So my question about this is that I am resizing the dialogs so that they will fit on a small screen size, but I am having lots of trouble fitting my resized images to the dialogs themselves. Does anyone know of a program or an easy way to get the images to fit the dialog without tons of trial by error?

Also another small question is that I cannot seem to find the "mask" to most of the title screens rolling images, like the one for the flaming "Nova" over the sun does anyone know where these are located?

Questions, Comments, Constructive Criticism are more them welcomed.

Most of the main menu images are in Nova Graphics 3, but not all of them have (or require) masks.

EVERYBODY ON THE GROUND, NOW!!! I'M HIJACKING THIS THREAD!!! I'LL BLOW YOUR F-ING HEADS OFF!!!

ahem

Is anyone here any good with Lightwave? I made a model that's halfway decent and yet I know nothing about texturing and I am presently lacking a manual. Who can tell me how to texture this bad mofo? Also, advice on engine glows and sprite-making would be appreciated. Thanks everyone.

FlyingRoacher: What I'd suggest is to take a screenshot of the DITL/DLOG resource for a given dialogue as appropriate and then draw in your image over it to ensure a good fit. Good luck on your project, too, though I doubt there are too many people who still use 640x480 screens with computers powerful enough for NOva :), it's still a noble undertaking.

As for virusT, I think I can speak for a majority of the users of this board when I say that we neither need nor want your kind around here. By "your kind", I mean lazy-(rear end) software pirates. There is no way you could possibly have a legitimate copy of LW7, given that you don't have a manual and seem to be rather clueless about something you would supposedly have spent two thousand dollars on. If you are using it in a University computer lab (which I highly doubt), ask someone knowledgeable around there, or better yet, enroll in 3d graphics class. If they have LightWave, they almost definitely have one of those.

And c'mon. If you're going to pirate it, at least have the common decency to do your damned homework and pirate a manual along with it and/or learn to use it yourself. It speaks volumes of your work ethic that you didn't bother to register for the board, as well.

Thank you Q for that advice it will make it a lot easier do this.

David thats also I found what I was looking for thanx to you.

Also yes I know that not to many people have 640x480(I do and its a 200 Mhz), but I wanted to do this to prove to myself that I can stay with a long project and not abondon it. Not only that but I do have that trouble with not knowing how much Free Mass I have or how much money things cost. 🙂

Also about LW I completely agree with Q about this.

Ouch. Burn.

But I completely agree with the statements of Mr. Q here.

Actually it's a trial version--i.e. free. But thanks for playing.

Am I still eligible for help or does nobody love me anymore? I still don't know how to make a texture and the README file does not cover it.

They make trial versions of LightWave? I did not know that...

There is no trial version of Lightwave, nice try. Were there one, I doubt as well that NewTek would be stupid enough not to include their PDF manual with it. Additionally, your efforts would be futile, since to prevent people from profiting, it would either be save disabled or render-watermarked. Furthermore, you say the README doensn't cover it. Well, I doubt that it would. It only contains "what's new" and "manual errata" 🙂

Sorry amigo, no cigar this round. But you know what? Since I'm a nice guy, if you can post a full screen screenshot of modeler running (with your model loaded, so I know it's yours), I'll tell you how to do texturing.

Cheers!

OK in my defense:

The file I downloaded (admittedly, not from the NewTek site) was <20 MB in size and simply read "Lightwave v7.0 Demo" Upon running the program, I found that many features simply did not work (for example, among the preset shapes that you can add, only the box, circle, capsule, torus, and cone worked). I then assumed that it was indeed a demo. No I don't remember anything about the site where I downloaded it, I simply remember being elated at finding a working, seemingly free version of trial software.

That said, I don't know anything about the software buisness, nor do i know anything about warez or software pirating. I don't really know what I'm running right now...

To summarize:

"The Ambrosia webboard people have the right to know whether or not one of their posters is a crook. Well, I am not a crook."

Anyways.

I have some screenshots of the model. How do I post them? I'm sorry, but I'm completely HTML illiterate.

(edit: Apparently, I'm also illiterate in the English language. Also, I'm a member now. Hooray for me.)

/me begins shifting and transforming. Lights flash. Helpful Q steps out into the forum.

Alright, I'll be trusting this once, since you seem like the honest type (or a good enough liar that it doesn't matter). To add textures to a model in Lightwave, you first have to set up surfaces. Do this by selecting the polygons you want to surface and hitting the 'q' key to bring up the surface editor. Type in a name for the surface and set a color and smoothing preference for its display in Modeler. The rest happens in layout.

Once you're in Layout with your model, open up the surface editor (don't remember which key off-hand) and select your surface, then pick your settings like texture, bump map, luminosity, etcetera. It's beyond the scope of a simple forum post to really get into the details of surfacing a spaceship if you're new to 3d, but a quick search on google should do the trick. If you're experienced in 3D and just trying out LW7, then you should be fairly comfortable with surfacing by now. It is a bit of an unorthodox system, but I kind-a like it.
