This is a message I posted to the EV3 development list - thought you'd like to see one of the many new cool things you'll be able to do with EV3:

---------------------
I'd like to point out to Jason that there is a whole new class of missions possible now: ground attack! I'd really like to see a few instances of this in the game... what this involves is thus:
1. Create a ship with zero speed and acceleration. Under the latest engine, it will always be fixed in place. Set it's "this is a planet-ship" flag. Set its inherent transparency to 100% - it doesn't even need any sprite graphics (except something with a mask to give it a shape for the collision-detection routines to use), just a picture for the target display.
2. Create a weapon for the player to use to attack ground targets, and set its "this weapon can hit planet-ships" flag.
3. Create a mission to go destroy a ground installation. Set the SpecialShipType to the ship you just made, set the ShipBehavior to "attacks player" or "neutral" as you desire, and set the ShipStart to "starts on top of nav default 1" (or 2-4 as you wish).
Now what you have is basically a standard go-kill-a-ship mission, with the difference being that you have to go attack a "ship" that is pretending to be a planetary or space station installation, and you have to use special weapons to do it. Of course, some of this is stuff that only exists in the copy I'm working with, but you might want to be thinking of some fun missions to send the player on to go blow up planetary installations and bases, space station docking bays and turrets, etc. etc. etc.

you guys had that in there!! this is great!!

did you have to post it two times ?
Oh, I posted on teh EV3 board that i thought this meant we could have a Starcract based attack missions on a planet. Oops. Just as cool though.

What would be even cooler would be if one could tie in EV3 with Diemos Rising. What one could have is a plug where you have to attack instillations on the planet. When you jump into the system a stream of enemy ships would attack you. Of course you could try to lure them away from the planet and then sneak in to land but you would first have to detroy the orbital defences. Once you have destroyed them you hit the land button. When you land the game automaticaly opens up Diemos rising but with a custom Diemos scenario loaded. You would then play that scenario and at the end it would give you a message of where to go at which point you would load up EV3 go to that system, and the mission would be over. Idealy this would be supported by the programing but it could be done with out it, providing there is a Diemos editor.

So basically this means that instead of ships mysteriously popping out of the planets we actually get to shoot at the planets and destroy turrets or whatever they have down there.

Sounds cool.
Hmm... I had an idea for the new engine that would have been easy to implement and was a smashing improvement, but can't remember what it was!!! I need to write this stuff down. I'll let you know if I think of it.... -david-

Ground attack missions would be cool. Idea for taking over planets: Destroy the space fleet, then go down to the planet, and take out the shield generators, turrets, and what-not.
Although I still think it's interesting that one ship could destroy an entire planet's defense force.

Didn't you read, you need a special weapon to take them out, presumably it'll be some experimental weapon given to you by a government.

yea. but if a developer wants he could make all the weapons able to attack planets. but i think it would be better to have atleast 2 fields. so that you could make seperate weapons to attack planets or stations.

If a developer did that it would be IMHO stupid. Yeah, your suggestion is good.
Can you specifically place the ship-planets? I think this would be really cool if a ship-planet could be placed over an existing planet-planet to look like an instillation on the real planets surface. Then when it is blown-up, BOOM! Just a planet with a crater in it (the crater would have been previously covered by the ship-planets graphic).
Sound good? Possible?

Why did you dig up this topic which has been dead for 1.5 years? You are flame bait right now. This is the 5th one today I've seen (all brought back by unregistered people). Will the mods/admin check who is doing this and ban his IP or something?

Note downfall of new server - abuse of search function. Either that, or we had one bored person.
hash, hash, rehash...
IP bans are in the works for at least one of the persistent fossil-diggers.
And topic-lockage did ensue...
