Importing Music (Sounds)

I'd like to make a new intro tune. Well, I already have the music, now I need to import it into ResEdit so it comes up as the intro to EV.

Could somebody help me with that? Maybe even do it for me, if it's not a hard task but requires "special" software.

Thanks a lot.

P.S. Yes, this is for an upcoming Plug-In.
Yes, you will be credited in any way (having to do with the Plug) you want.

You have a few options. If the sound is in the Mac OS sound file format (sfil/movr, if you are a resource-editor person you can change the creator and stuff), you can put it into ResEdit conventionally.

However. What I did is this; I went to my local Radio Shack and bought an A/A(audio-audio) playback/recording cord, and put both ends in my speaker/mic port. Then I downloaded SoundEffects...someone here should know where to get it, and I started recording in SoundEffects, then I played the song...It must be in like 11khz or something to work properly. If it requires higher, then use it, but be careful, it may turn out to be some maniacally high pitched distorted song. Then, stop the recording, save it as a sound file, and then add it into ResEdit. SoundEffects is the best tool that you can get for this...free too, I think.

What I have:
The song I want imported (a Scottish bagpipe song called The Hills of Machrech ) is im *.mp3 format. I can change it to iTunes format, but what's the point since iTunes can play MP3s?

That's pretty much all I know about sound on a computer.

I do, however, have a built-in mic on my G3 iMac and I think I can record sound with it. So, maybe if I turned it on, then turned iTunes on (with the song playing), it'd record the song too. As long as I keep the environment free of other sounds.

Is that right?

If not, how much does an A/A cost? And I probably wouldn't know the first thing to recording sound besides what I said above.

I am not willing to purchase anything over 10 bucks. So, like I said above, maybe I should have someone do it for me. But I guess nobody's nice enough to do that for me... :frown:

(edit) BTW - you can get SoundEffects at (url="http://"http://www.modenstudios.com/evodev/")Resource Freighter 3(/url) under UTILITIES.

Well, I guess there is a reason to convert it to an iTunes sound file. Why? Because SoundEffects can't open RealPlayer MP3s!! STUPID-@$$ RP takin' over my computer! I only got RP because I wanted to watch a wider variety of videos. But NO! IT has to download ALL MP3s as RP MP3s!! Why is this such a big problem? Well, because iTuner and SoundExtractor are too stubborn to be able to read RP MP3s!! JEEZ!

(Okay, I'm back to reality now.)

Hmm, MP3's are a little difficult. EV only supports regular sound resources -- that is, no special compression algorithms or anything like MP3 or, um, well, can't come up with anything else. But basically, the standard sound file is what you need to have in order to copy it to your plug-in with ResEdit.

What you need to do is get a program that'll convert MP3 files to WAV format or System 7 Sound format (whatever the convention is, it's all the same) on the Mac. You should make sure you have plenty of disk space for this...just run this program and convert your MP3 to the the ordinary sound file (the kind you can double-click in Finder and it'll play without opening a sound player).

After you've converted it, open the file with ResEdit and open the SND resource; click on the single sound resource that should be there and copy it. Paste in your plug-in and change to the correct ID (whatever is currently "EV Intro Music" or whatever).

Contrary to what Lequis said, for Intro Music you DO NOT have to worry about bit rate. Or, well, I'm 95% sure of that.

I'd offer to do this for you, but I have a dialup connection, and these files can get huge. If you're confused about anything (and you probably are, I didn't explain everything all that thoroughly), just ask.

Hmm, looking what you said over, you might have to resort to just recording the thing with your mic. In that case, I think you should be able to do it...just use any program that'll record sound and save it properly (if you look for an old program called Sound Editor, it works just fine for this), record, and save it in the standard format. Then do whatever else I said.

Hope this helps.

Yeah I know I need to convert MP3s. That's what I've been trying to do. But NOTHING will convert them!

I could also use AIFF (*.aif) with SoundEffects, but I've never heard of that, so...

I sure hope I have enough space... since I don't think anything that I am into right now will take up over 150 GB of internal/external HD space. 🙂

Thanks...

(edit) Damn VersionTracker has been down today so I can't go there... (/edit)

Hey SB,

All you need is Quicktime Pro. It is the best $30 you can spend. It will export to almost any format.

Or for the really cheap there's a free way to get it. Quicktime 2.5 came with the pro version built in. Because quicktime is a sytem resource all you need is the movieplayer from quicktime 2.5 and you can use almost the features of quicktime 5 pro. Just make shure it includes the extras and authoring plug-ins.

E-mail me if you can't find it.

Yeah, I don't know how well recording would work out, but it'd work. I'd try other stuff first though.

Also, the AIFF format isn't what you want when you import into your plug-in; it has to be in System 7 Sound format.

A/A cables cost about $2-4 US. I have two. They are not perfect, though, you'd have to spend a bit more to get one that would record perfectly...I've had a few problems with this, but it's worth it anyways. Then, you can use a program - SoundEffects is the only one I know of that saves into System 7 Sound Format - to record. ResEdit isn't good as it can't record while in another application...you must keep the resedit dialog open at all times.

SoundApp, various others can convert Mp3 to AIFF. This takes a bit of time- less than 45 seconds per song. Soundeffects can convert AIFF to S7SF, but it cannot convert Mp3s.

Actually, you do need to worry about bitrate...somehow...Ever played Phantasy Star 2? or 3....maybe, I dunno. I took the nice, happy upbeat song from the main screen and sequenced it into Composer's Mosaic(my midi program) and then I recorded it into S7SF. I double clicked--- 0.4 second pause - aAAAHHH, it became distorted and played REALLY fast. Supposedly it must be at 11khz or something. I don't remember. or 22 or something. Experiment a bit. Also...it is somewhat important that your sound is not like 4 minutes long. With the PS2 song it was longer than it should have been, thus it...somehow screwed up.

The SoundEffects page is down now, though. I don't know why. If you have AIM I could send it to you over AIM...it's not very big.

Good luck...

Ok, I just checked, it's less than 2 MB for all the effect files and the app itself...Yeah..if you have AIM or IRC, just contact me and I can send it.

Well, yeah I know. But SoundEffects can convert AIFF files to System 7 files. That's what it says anyway.

Just eMail me, 'cuz I don't use AIM if I don't have to. And I'm pretty busy. I check my eMail once every half hour, or more.

I hit myself for not remembering...MoviePlayer (a freeware ap used with QuickTime). Took about fifteen seconds to open the mo3 with it, and export as EV/EVO READY 8-bit, 11 khtz mono sound file.

I use ResEdit myself; I open the resource fork of the System7 sound file (probably works with ordinary .aiff as well) and copy-paste into the plug-in's snd resources.

The music tracks are the only exception in that EVO music can be 22 khtz (a little more quality). Still note; my original mp3 was 514 K. The 11 khtz mono file was 340 K; a 22 khtz would be a whopping 680 K! As a rule of thumb, these formats are 1 meg a minute. Uncompressed CD audio is 10 megs a minute.

(BTW, I always trash the players that come with QuickTime. I find them annoying and lacking in function. CNET.com has much, much better shareware and freeware players for download).

lequis, the problem with your method is that the signal is turned from digital, to analog, back into digital...Electronics is far from perfect....its best just to find a converting program. Otherwise you are likely to lose quality.

The particular problem you had here was when you were converting from EV Intro Music to S7SF, not the other way around. So it was probably a problem with the program you used.

I'm pretty sure that EV will take just about any bitrate; I've tried it with mulitiple bitrates, and if I remember correctly, neither of the EV intro songs use 11.127 Khz. Or whatever the bitrate is for EV sounds.

To convert a sound to aiff or wav, go into iTunes 2 and go to the preferences menu. Select 'Importing' and make the 'Import using:' menu either .aiff or .wav (you can also select the sample rate by going into 'Configuration:Custom'. Close the window and go to the 'Advanced' menu, then 'Export to aiff'. Select the file, then wait.

A little off the subject, but I finally opened the show I was working on. Wrote about 12 minutes of original orchestral work, of which less than 8 is heard in the actual show.

I like my new Roland string module (M-SE1)! I was able to break down the string writing into first violin divi-1, divi-2, second violin, viola, 'cello section, solo 'cello, double-bass; I have my MIDI channels set up in score order from woodwinds and brass through percussion and strings. All Roland modules but I want to add a Samplecell soon.

Anyhoo, I'm finally seeing a little free time, and might even work on my plug a little now...
