Lightwave 7 Demo

Does anyone know where I could find a demo of Lightwave 7? I have a quick look around (url="http://"http://www.lightwave3d.com")www.lightwave3d.com(/url) (the homepage of Lightwave) and couldnt find it. I also tried at (url="http://"http://www.download.com")www.download.com(/url) but I couldnt find it there either. I know there is one as my friend has it on a cover cd for a magazine but he lost the cd!

I am seriously concidering the purchase of Lightwave but before I whip out the cash i would like to find out whether I would get on with it or not, as Strata 3D Pro which is a program I am used to costs conciderably less for my accademic version.

Jules, do you know if there is a demo of Strata3D Pro anywhere?

You wont find a demo anywhere, lightwave has no demos. The only (legal) way I know of getting a trial run is to see if you have a friend with a copy you can use for a few minutes.

Maybe you should get some people together and make a petition πŸ˜›

Yes, there is. At (url="http://"http://www.strata.com")www.strata.com(/url), you can download Strata3Dbase, which is a free program with some features disabled.

Wrongo. They are offering, free of all charge, to ship a CD with the demo of LightWave 7 to you. I got it just fine, though it took a little while to ship.

I'm kind of peeved with the demo, though - running it messes up my (full) version of LW 6.5. Grr.

I wouldn't recommend Lightwave though. I've played around with it a bit and if you are used to Strata it is incredibly difficult. The interface is non-intuitive, there are actually too many options, and the seperation into two different programs, modeler and renderer, is annoying. In my opinion you'd probably be better off with looking for Infini-D if you wanted something more powerful.

Well, I agree that Lightwave is hard to use, but only because it's one of the most powerful 3D programs available (aside from Maya and Electric Image). Cinema 4D is Lightwave's competitor, and I much prefer it. The layout is much nicer and easier to use, while Lightwave's takes some serious time to learn. It's a good step from Infini-D.

Uh. Infini-D is about half as powerful as almost any version of any modeler Strata has developed. And of course changing from one modeler is difficult . . . it's not like changing from any of Strata's modelers would be any easier changing to Infini-D than LightWave.

I've often heard that Infini-D's modeller is nearly as powerful as Lightwave's...

Skyblade: I beg to differ... you have so much more polygon/point manipulation control in lightwave, and you save so much more points/polys in lightwave than infini-d=faster rendering. Plus, you dont have to look at the image as its rendering. I personally think that lightwave's only competitor would be Animation:Master for its patching work. aside from that...

Heh, guys, there is no 'best' modeler, it all depends on what you want to do and what you're used to. Lightwave is best for people who mess around with mesh's directly, but it cannot compete with C4D in terms of spline modeling.

I personally dislike Infini-D, and strata even more so. Anyway, the best thing to do is to try the demos and make up your own mind.

the best 3D modeling program, by far, is Mindwave. It will be released sometime in 3005. It will cost about $300, read your brain waves, and instantly render what you imagine. It has a nice, user friendly interface and should only take a few minutes to get used too. The only drawback is the release date...

Ahem
that was done in Bryce3D....
😜
and I agree with blackhole -> to each his own.

CD4 probably does have better spline manipulation, but then, lightwave has metaNURBS...which is equally as usefully...

What was? (My flyby image was made in Infini-D with post in PShop, if you were referring to that.)

Quite true. It doesn't matter how good the program is if you can't use it or don't like it.

...renamed Subpatches. Very useful indeed. Lightwave (6.5 at least) can do spline modelling, but it has to be used to generate polys. I'd like a thing where it retains the splines and generates the polys automatically from the splines, not generating the polys once and saving those. Get what I mean?
