Okay, this could work in either EV or EVO, since it has nothing to do with other scenarios in the game. If I did this, however, it would be for EV. The player is in the bar on Earth (for EV I'd have to give it a bar) and meets a very oddly-dressed man. He's from the past. I'm thinking he should be King Arthur, but it could technically be anyone from the game's past. For some reason, player takes King Arthur (or whoever) in his/her ship. Then they try and figure out how King Arthur came into the future. The answer will eventually be revealed. I think the people who brought Arthur to the future should be a race of peaceful and highly advanced hermit-type aliens found on a desert world in some hidden system (they also built the pyramids). Then player gets Arthur back to his time period. My question is this: is this a good idea, or just lame? Even if I did it it would have to be done later- I'm in the middle of my first large-scale plug-in anyway. (/babbling lunatic)

That is quite different. I think that, if well thought-out, it could be very good.
This race could be bringing back idols of mankind to try to talk man out of war, or something. Like Ghandi, and whatnot. And maybe large civil war (we could still do this with confed vs. rebellion theme, or two other clashing super powers) could be stopped by the profound teachings of men from the past, or something. Plato, and the like. And then you travel through time into a system with an "old" Earth, and you drop them off. Hrmm... Very interesting.
Luke, forgive me for forgetting, but exactly what large scale plugin are you currently working on? Is there a site for it?

I never heard you talk about this before. Do you think you could send me (or just post online) the current build? I would like to poke around and see what you have done. Are you working with anybody?
I think you should give it a shot. You never know, it could just be the next big plug. I've tinkered around with plugs but never did much beyond making a couple cheat plugs in Ev-Edit. I think the best thing I did was probably make a plug that modified weapon and armor/sheilding enhancement descriptions that actually told you how much damage the weapons would do and how much protection the sheilds and armor would give you. Do you guys use Ev-Edit? I find it to be a little restricting in some ways, like you can't add sounds to the game, but it's also easy to use. I've been using Hera lately and making Ares plugs and I find that it has a lot more flexibility, but a lot more bugs.

Pretty much no one who is making a large, serious plugin uses EV-Edit. It is buggy and has a very bad reputation... Most people stick to Shmelta-V, ResEdit, dev. map, and a few other little tools like EV Formula calc. At least for EV plugins, I don't know about EVO.

You will find that pretty much everyone has that opinion. Including me. EV-Edit screwed my rather chunky EV:O plugin 'Out of the Dust' about 2 years ago, when it was about 90% complete. Grrr. At least it taught me to back my plugins up and not use EV-Edit, but I never got round to redoing Out of the Dust, instead starting a new plugin.

Thanks. Where can I get these? (I have Res-Edit)

I've only mentioned it once or twice on the boards. It's in three seperate plugs right now, which I will later meld into one. Later I'll post the main part of the three (url="http://"http://www.ambrosiasw.com/games/ev/addons.html")here.(/url) And I'm doing it by myself. Because of that and the fact that it's my first big plug, it probably sucks right now, but it is still very much a work in progress.
To Shrout1: Thank you for the enthusiasm! I think I will go ahead and use this idea, after Torgo and Beyond is done. And get your arse away from EV-Edit if you know what's best for you. EVO Dev map is (url="http://"http://members01.chello.se/warlordpontus/ev/evomap.html")here,(/url) but Schmelta-V is a little trickier to find. Good luck in your quest.

I see.
Personally I used EV-Edit, so I suppose that puts my stuff in its place as being either not large or not serious.
Oh well.

no wonder it took like a year martin. EV edit always lost all of my info, and the backup saved copies were currupted just as quickly.

Martin, keep in mind that I said "pretty much anyone," and not "everyone." If you really know what you are doing, and later go through everything with ResEdit and make sure all is well, EV-Edit can be helpful. Most people who are SERIOUS prefer to save time by using resedit, because it is pretty much fool proof. I did not mean that your work is not serious, but if you are using a tool as problem-prone as EV-Edit, you are probably not very serious about what you are making.
People making large plugins tend not to trust EV-Edit as it can screw things up, thereby ruining weeks (months, or years) worth of work. Did you read about what happened to Mazca?

Ah, I understand now. My problem is that I am not serious, even though my work may be.
Just for the record, perhaps people would like to list the large plugins they have made and released without using EV-Edit at all.
Any takers?

Frozen Heart took 14 months, but Femme Fatale only took six weeks. I used EV-Edit to sketch out the scenario for both of them, and for all the weapons, outfits and ships. For both I did the missions in SchmeltaV. It was writing the missions and testing them that took the most time, with rendering the ships as second most. I used ResEdit for the bits that these two programs wouldn't do, and for fixing stuff after running it through plugchecker.
The most appropriate technique I found for EV-Edit is to create a new file for every editing session. At the end of the session, test the file. If it all checks out, copy/paste it into your main file using ResEdit. If it doesn't work, or if you just don't like it, throw away the new file. This works well for EV-Edit because it can access multiple files at once. I also found that EV-Edit very rarely crashes on small files, but becomes increasingly unstable with multi-meg files, so it also makes sense to keep your graphic file separate.
Done this way, there really shouldn't be any problems.
Incidentally, Schmelta is also very unstable on big files, which is why I kept my FH Graphics as a separate file so it wouldn't have to access it.
It goes without saying that you keep backing up onto separate media.
Regards
Martin
I think you can get Schmelta V (or at least an old version) off the Ambrosia CD.(The version I found only does EV, so I just copy from an EV plugin and paste to an EVO plugin. I can't open those hqx files, so I can't get EVO dev. map, EV-edit, etc. I'm doing fine with Res Edit, Clarisworks, and Schmelta V, though.
I like the idea. Time traveling would be neat, and if you need a technical explanation, the aliens could have warped time on a hyperlane so you could "hyperjump" though time.
Just my two cents.

There is no EV Override version of Schmelta-V. However, I have written a mission editor (see below) for EV Override which is currently in beta testing and should be released shortly.

...and it's looking good! There's never been a decent EVO Mission Editor, thanks David.
