So, how are these supposed to be made? ...
Do I need to re-render every frame with lights & glow on? I'm just kind of confused on how to go about all this.
Is there anywhere (not the EVN bible) that I can look to see how this should be done? Any help would be great. Thanks!

As I understand it, they are overlays on the current ship, so you render the lights/glows in the correct spin order, put the transparancy in the right place to see the ship through and it works. Maybe pipeline or someone could help here...

This is correct, but you have to do a separate visual 'layer' for any of the following that you wish to include:
Engine Glow Weap Glow Running Lights Shield Image Alternate Sprites (a memory cheap way of creating animations)
When Nova is shipped, you will get a clearer idea by looking at the various shan resources.
