Oye! I was looking for a 3-D starmap to ensure that astronomers don't laugh at me TOO hard when I make my plugin, and whaddaya know! There's a good one, with seven and nine parsec radii maps, at (url="http://"http://www.clark.net/pub/nyrath/starmap.html")www.clark.net/pub/nyrath/starmap.html(/url). I'm using it for Enganda Chron.

No there's not! What happened to it?
(Aha! It were the period in the address that did it. Also the site is now moved (url="http://"http://www.projectrho.com/starmap.html")here(/url), they tell us.)

Hey, that's pretty kewl. Its a shame we couldn't totally screw up EV players by adding a third dimension to the universe

I actually have a CD full of star charts and such. I've been using it for coming up with names of stars and such. Mainly uninhabited ones, as ones with inhabitated planets don't do well when named NGC-2351 or N-5. Anatole

He was Imbued with the power, the idea, the strength he would need to lead his people to absolute rule. Resurrected power, long forgotten on the torn and shattered Earth. Almighty lord, Nasher Degy, awoke, and prepared his elite power for use on his hated opponents. Almighty First, just like that. - Antigan Codex, Book of Antigan. 1:1

Yeah, I wouldn't mind a copy of it, if that's possible . . .
I've also found cool stuff at (url="http://"http://www.solstation.com")http://www.solstation.com(/url) related to 3D starmaps (Java!), but their actual program isn't available for Mac...
A quick note on star names: I don't think the NGC catalog lists stars at all -- it refers to objects like star clusters and nebulae. I think stars would go by a different naming scheme (based on constellations and location in the sky).
Actually, if you're interested in coming up with realistic names, you could just do some simple research; if you do a good job, it shouldn't be too hard to come up with stuff.
