Graphics

So, what do you all think of this? (full version (url="http://"http://www.pacificnet.net/~restorer/3d/CivFighterBig.jpg")here(/url))

It's based heavily on one of the Nova ships, with the addition of the turret and some details. Comments, questions, or concerns?

Fairly nice. The edges are a bit polygonated, but I guess you can't help that... Silly non POV-Ray users... j/k

Reminds me of those giant transport planes for some reason; I think it's the lack of any visible cockpit. Only problem is, that would make the engines and turret huge... Oh, and speaking of the turret, is there any way it could swivel up? The whole ship seems more like a pocket warship than a fighter. I'd probably pull the side engines in a bit closer to the hull, and make the upper fin extend a bit further back, but those suggestions are based on the notion of the ship being a pocket warship.

Speaking of POV-Ray, I just downloaded that. Do you have any ships models I can play around with that are very simple?

Also, about the graphic, it's pretty good. The JPEG format screwed with it, but it looks kinda like you made it in Mechanisto. It has the tell-tale non-curved front hull. Otherwise, it's good. I like the gold rings on the engines.

I referred to the Nova fighter some more, and worked out a scale. I've angled the wings down, stretched out the ridge on top, moved the top engine back, and redone the body. And of course, I've added the cockpit and removed the turret (I agree, it was to big). And check it out: with the redo of the body, I fixed the polygonation on the front (there's still some on the engines though).

My next venture, which I've already started, is the Fed/Pirate Fighter from Nova, or at least a close variation. I've got a lot of the model done, I just have to fine-tune it and get some textures. Anyone know of any good places to get ship/plating textures, other than Meowx's site?

Here it is in its incomplete form. I'll work on the front end, try to change the polygonated creases to more of a mechanical "bend", and I might find a better texture, but this one looks OK for now. Comments on these two?

-Matt

P.S.: I hate to post twice in a row on my own topic, but I wanted to get this one up ASAP.

Alright then, just let me do the talking... 😛
My third in this series, very loosely based on another Nova ship (see if you can guess which one). As always, (url="http://"http://www.pacificnet.net/~restorer/3d/SmallFighterBug.jpg")full view here(/url).

I'm finally starting to get good at lofting. Oh, and in case you want to know, I'm using Ray Dream Studio 5, rather than Mechanisto, POV-Ray, Infini-D, or whatever else people use to make ships. Sure it's old, but it works.

P.S.: I now own two-thirds of the posts on this topic. 🆒

All in all, nice stuff. Not NOVA quality, but certainly good enough for a TC or EV/O plug-in.
That first ship of yours now looks like a blockade runner.

The truth is, most graphics developers (the majority, that is) won't be able to compete with the Nova graphics upon creating their plugins. There is nothing wrong with making your plugin images plain and simple. No, your images don't quite match that of the Nova graphics, but who cares? They'd do fine with any of the three EV games...

Nice work. You should post some of these at the Image Gallery.

Yeah, the only people I've seen that can come anywhere near the EV:Nova quality is the people who did the grafix in Pale, and the guy from grand-novice.com. And of course EVula comes in a close third 😛

btw I like the ships, you'll just need more detail once you start working on larger ships.
