Macavenger, how did you make the object that is the body of your ship? Did you flatten a sphere, bend it and then rib it? Or what?

Rounded Cubes rotated 45 degrees along the z-axis, then scaled and tapered. It's two pieces.

Macavenger, I understand that your ship is still in the developmental stage, but those red fins don't at all match the rest of the ship. The front part of your ship is very nice, but the back does not match it. Maybe make the edges of the rear section of the ship a little sharper.

Hmm, I'd planned to have the fins in, and they look OK to me. I tried moving the fins back a bit and removing the transition piece from the engines to the body. That one is here: I could also try to round off the edges of the fins a bit, think that would help?
Also, there will be more red on the final, textured model, if that was a problem.
Yeah, before you end your work on that you should be sure to make some finishing touches on the color scheme.
Ok, out of jealousy for Macavenger's ship, I have made my own. This is the bare basics, without any detail. I still need to add a lot of things to make it look realistic, but here is the Barkaly heavy fighter:
I plan to somehow convert that wacked out sphere on the top of the fin into some sort of engine, and add two more engines to the back. I'm not sure quite how.. I have to sleep on it.
Comments are appreciated.
That looks a bit better, Macavenger, but is it anti-aliased? It looks a bit grainy on the edges.
The red fins look... weird. Try making a shader for the body that is sort of a gray/red mix, so that there is less contrast.

That is quite impressive, it has a certain nice feel to it. Macavenger, yeah, I think those fins will look a lot better when you have added red in other places.
Tail fin looks to be a bit tall in the first place, to me. It's much taller than either of the side fins are wide, or at least appears that way in the perspective. I'd shrink it down a bit.

Heh, don't worry about that. It's not entirely fair to call this my first ship, since I do have prior 3D modeling experience, just not in Mechanisto or anything remotely similar.
That's not impressive. It needs a more intricate texture... And it needs a lot more detail on the wings. In fact, I am going to put a special texture on the wings. I have a ton of work to do on this...
Can someone explain real quick how the flatten transform works? I may be able to get the back end to match up a bit better (and make it look more like what I have a school, incidentally), but I can't get the flatten transform to do anything.
Ares1, you need to not be so harsh on yourself and put things into perspective. You just sarted using Mechanisto, what you made is impressive for a beginner. Anyways, here's a picture of a ship I'm curently working on. It's not even close to being done, but I think that it's coming along nicely:
That looks pretty good.
Hey, do you know where I might find some ev-ish textures? Meowx has a texture vault, but you have to sign up and wait for a password and all that... Skyblade is going to have one, but isn't finished with his site yet.
Ok, I have updated my Barkaly heavy fighter. It really needs a cool texture, but I am waiting to find some textures instead of trying to make them on my own...
I really need to do something with the "guns" on the wings. I tried making hemispheres with guns coming out, and moving those around, but it looks horrible. So I just put cylinders on the wings. Any suggestions as to how I can improve the guns?
I lowered the afts some, and reduced the size of the sphere on the tips. In my next revision I will make the afts smaller.
(edit) I know how the torus on the cockpit needs to be translated, because it is extruding from the glass, so don't bother telling me.

I don't see any guns, are you sure that you have the right picture?
The little lines coming off the wings...

For some reason I can't see them...
uhm... There are cylinders on each wing. You have to be blind to not see them... Hrm. Try reloading the image. They are as clear as can be.

Okay, I quit my browser and opened it again and now I can see it fine. You really need to fix that torus surronding the front of the cockpit, it's not toughing the cockpit. Besides that I looks good. About the guns though, gun are things that just require creativity, because they don't need to be sleek etc. Once, I was making a ship, but ended up turning that ship into a part of a gun. Complexity makes guns look good, so just put little details here and there and you'll be fine.

Hey Kwanza, aren't you a big mechanisto guy? I thought I saw your name mentioned in Squib's ship tutorial.
