As mentioned in my Vengeance Saga Thread, I am developing a rather large plugin. I need some names for planets in the Alien "Galaxy". There are 2 types of aliens that are going to be included.
1. The Praxis These are the Aliens responsible for the Great War. I could not avoid giving them a name, if there is already a name for them then someone please correct me.
2. The Mah'dann An (Extinct)Ancient Alien race, which holds the key to some of the mystery in the plugin. Hence I can't say more about them.
So some serious planet names would be appreciated. Also if you can suggest enough useful planet/system names then I will allow you to name a ship whatever you want (It has to sound realistic as well.

Here are some: Ceiku Sigma Sebou Oduba Septimus Ututuo Gony Omicron Nhaab Ega Lab Uzoneg Aumla-Uiv Beta Egac Alpha Adoje Khofem Wheib Tum-Hi Uzosa Hirue Amabusoa Alpha Ezozi Tasao Dubuo
Hope that helps a bit. If you were wondering I got all of those from (url="http://"http://www.seventhsanctum.com/gens/")The Page Of Generators(/url) which has a huge number of generators for anything imaginable (well almost).

There's a planet name generating program somewhere in the addons section, I think. It gives you a list of thousands of plug names, but i can't remember what it's called...
However, beware using it. It always creates names in the same order, so DONT use any of the ones at the top of the list. The number of systems in different plugs i've seen called 'Varsis' is truly cringe-inducing.

You could look for star charts online and use names of real stars. Of course, most sunlike stars aren't as bright as big giant stars that are bad for life (or so we think), so if you want to be realistic, you end up with system names like "BD +16° 1660". Those look kinda cool, but can you imagine a universe full of such?

I believe the utility Mazca is referring to is "EV Names." It is part of the EV-Edit package but may be available alone. It is an excellent utility for what it is intended to do.
To avoid the problem Mazca mentions, the "STR "s that EV Names uses to generate names can be changed so you get a completely different set of names than the stock version produces. Instructions for doing this are provided with the utility.

Err... I have a system named Varsis, generated by EV-Names. Since you said that, I think I will rename it.
And, yes, it is available as a single package. In the addons section under utilities called EV Names. Great tool.

I've searched for hours and I haven't found a single map of the galaxy. All the star charts out there are of the nigh sky which is highly inaccurate because the stars are placed according to their position in the night sky on Earth and since not all the stars are the same distance apart, it makes for a map that's not even close to being scientifically accurate. If someone has managed to find an actual map of the galaxy, I would appreciate it if you send it to me or give me an URL.

Best I've seen is a map out to 20 LY, which I found in a book about the SETI Project. If I still have a copy of it somewhere I'll scan it for you.
Back when I ref'd a science-fiction game, half the star systems had generic catalog names like GB-11'42" or SS-4404. Also -- the majority of the reachable star systems had nothing but the odd fuel depot, perhaps cargo yards and the rare asteroid miner. Habitable worlds were few and far between.

I have some maps on my computer, which I'm not on at the moment (I'm visiting my family for the weekend) so when I get back, I'll post them.

The aliens in Escape Velocity have no official name, so you can call them whatever you want. However, "Praxis" was the name of a Klingon moon in (url="http://"http://us.imdb.com/Title?0102975")Star Trek VI: The Undiscovered Country(/url), so you might want to find something more specific to your plugin.

You could use the ColdStone name generator to create system names. Just put in some alien sounding word fragments and you'll be surprised by the results.

I am currently creating a file (eventually to be posted on the addons page) with lots of spob names. I've only gotten through the "H"s so far, but perhaps you can use some of these. On another note, they don't sound very alien...

You have way too much time on your hands, Captain. For an easy way to get alien sounding names check through an edition of the science-fiction encyclopedia. It's a rather interesting book.

Err, I actually started working on that four months ago. I didn't resume work until I got the time recently.

No luck yet. Came up with a chart of the 33 nearest stars, but it does not list RA and declension -- just name, distance, and spectral type. Could try comparing that with an ordinary star chart to get the direction, then plot the distance, but given as many have visual magnitudes below 10, they aren't going to be shown in your average "Sky Watcher" star chart.
And, yes, memory served correctly; only five have well-known names (6 if you count Wolf 359, which figures prominently in a Star Trek episode). Fully half are binary or trinary, and all but a handful are K and M; small, red stars generally bad for supporting habitable worlds.
I'm scanning the chart; it will be on my site at (url="http://"http://home.earthlink.net/~nomuse/nearstar.jpg")http://home.earthlin...se/nearstar.jpg(/url)
What I have is basically what you're looking for. Lots of files of nearby stars, not-so-nearby stars, with location relative to earth and the plane of galactic rotation, as well as star type, names, all sorts of things. Unfortunately, as I said, I don't have access to them ATM. Once I get back to my apartment on Wednesday, I'll be able to put the files up on my iDisk.
Whats so hard about coming up with names? Just think of an object, say chair. Change a few letter, add, or remove a few, and end up with something like Chaliar. Not sound alien enough? Cha'Lair. Bingo. Time to create: less than five seconds. Another helpful tip for making names is to think of a general theme for every race. For example YOUR RACE: Uses few/no 'e's and lots of 'h's and 'd's ect. Then you change a common word to fit your chacteristics better.
Here is a small list of stars, WARNING some are made up. Aladfar Alathfar Albaldah Alchiba Alfirk Alkalurops Alphekka Alpheratz Alshain Asellus Azelfafage Azmidiske Nusakan Rasalgethi Sadalsuud Seginus Situla Cebalrai Dschubba Gorgonea Herschel's Hyadum Kajam Kitalpha Kornephoros Maasym Mekbuda Metallah Sualocin Theemim Zaurak Zavijah Zibal Acamar Mintaka
And a list from the old version of Silent NIght. I am not using most of these ones. The numbers are ID numbers, I didn't bother to remove 'em.
