A question that you've all heard a million times, with a twist.

Ok, EVO's crashing at startup when I try to beta test SRE. It gives me the "lack of memory" message. But I've already gone over all the standard stuff:

checked the spins
checked to see EVO had enough memory
made sure no graphics were corrupted
checked all game constraints
checked that there were no resources pointing to resources that didn't exist
I haven't used EV-Edit on this plug

NOTHING!

Could anyone think of anything I'm forgetting? Please?

I can only advise you how to narrow down where the problem lies: the scientific method.

Depending the number of resources in your plug (n) make n+1 copies of your plug, then delete resources so each plug has only one resource type. On n+1, remove all the resources. Start with the n+1 plugin (that lacks resources) and run EVO. That's your control plug. Now, keep adding single resource plugins until EVO chokes. That'll tell you what resource type is giving problems.

Now that you know what resource type is giving you a problem, make a copy of that plugin. Delete 1/2 of the resource types and try and runn EVO. For example, if you're problem lies in the syst resource type and you have 100 systems, delete the last 50 systs from the resource. If it crashes, the problem is in the first 50 syst resources. Keep divinging by half until you get a sucessful load and you'll narrow in on the problem resource. Of course, if you have to delete all of the syst resources before it works, than the whole resource is screwed.

Of course, you might just be trying to run EVO while the plugin's resource fork is open in an editor.

Ok. The problem is somewhere in the graphics and sounds file. I still checked all the spins that I've modified/added within the last few months. Perhapse there is a game constraint on Max Spins? There are quite a few...

Nope, if there is a max it will ignore them IIRC, but the max types determine the max spins...

As for the snds, make sure they are 11khz 8bit mono.

Nevermind, problem fixed. I'd moved some PICT ID's that went to some old spins and forgot to change the spins.

"Standard stuff" should always include running 'Plug Checker', it can save hours of work in situations like this. It should be in the utilities section of the archives, or it can be found here:

Aside from the EV Bible, Plug Checker is probably the most useful tool for plug developing. It's not perfect, it will warn about "errors" that are not actually errors, but it's a great time saver for checking and reviewing plug resources.
