Star Wars Plug-ins

I don't know if anyone else is planning a Star Wars EVN plug, but when I was working on the apparently-scrapped SWEVO with the long-gone-from-the-boards Stormbringer, we were setting up our plug-in so the entire galaxy, ships and tech were in one plug-in, and the story scenario was in another. The premise was that people could populate the galaxy with their own stories, or remove the story plug-in and create their own. We were actually planning two story modules becuase we had a difference of opinion over whether to do Star Wars in the future (following the books) or a Star Wars galaxy in the "A New Hope" era.

I say this for the benifit of anyone planning a Star Wars EVN plug-in... I won't be making one any time soon since I do not have the graphical resources without Stormbringer's contacts and it would be nice to see this stuff (edit) namely the story system (/edit) spring up in a new SWEVN plug.

I keep talking about planning SWEVN, because it is really worth waiting for to make a Star Wars plug-in. From star destroyers cruising by in a dark empty system with only their running lights visble to intertia-less ships, almost every feature of EVN can be exploited to make a Star Wars plug-in incredibly awesome.

I am planning on making SWN. Its storyline is already complete. It covers everythinf from Episodes IV-VII, and a medium amout of the books. The only problem I forsee having is making the graphics. I don't have any clue how to use Strata.

I've always found Star Wars graphics to be next to impossible, even with software I know how to use.

Then how did you get graphics in SWII? Or did you have someone do them for you?

Oh, by the way, I believe you {Admiral Benden} requested to be in the Daedalus Developers'. That is fine with me; you just have to tell me what you would like to be doing (you could be doing bits of everything, I'd just like to know beforehand).

I did not put any new graphics in SW2 2.1.0. What I produced is a bug fix. I am currently trying to fix a problem that someone mentioned that I hadn't noticed before. If I can get everything to work right, I should be able to get everything in SW2 working AND upload an uncorrupt version of it into ASW's site.

I've been working on a SW plugin for EVO (which I will port to EVN as soon as I'm done w/ this version), and I was about to make a post asking for help in graphics...
Anyway, my plug will cover the end of Episode III (staring three years before Episode IV) and going straight through past Episode VII and into the books that follow, all the way up to the final days of the Empire. Unfortunately, I can't get any graphics (I was planning on using Kris Hauser's; I believe I got his permission a long time ago...), and I suck at writing. We really need to consolidate all our efforts, or do something to that effect. Although that would eliminate the whole reason I started on my own plug, to do it the "right way".

Well, if anyone wants to work with me, I need a writer, and maybe a graphics artist (but only if your graphics can rival those of Kris Hauser). E-Mail me at (url="http://"mailto:restorer@pacificnet.net")mailto:restorer@pacificnet.net(/url)restorer@pacificnet.net

Oh, also, whatever happened to the Recruitment page? It used to be on the escape-velocity.com site, but since that was taken over by Ambrosia, the page has disappeared. Anyonw know of another one I can use?

Apparently you misunderstood my question; I'll re-word it: Where did you get the graphics at all?

I got the graphics out of SW2 1.0.3. I then rewrote the stuff that needed fixing, such as the extra boxes in the shipyard. Mr. Hauser just put in a bunch of empty shďp resources when what he needed to do was give those empty shďp resources a ridiculous tech number. This makes them unavailable and you don't get anymore unsightly boxes. It was simple things, but it took a while to get everything to work better.

I would glady join up with a group to create a Star Wars EVN plug-in, however I am only really interested in creating my own story scenario, though Deepwood's sounds kind of like what I wanted to do, hence my post to hint on a way that someone could create a Star Wars plug-in so that I could do that. 🙂

The only really feasable way to divide work between the maximum number of people is to put someone on research, another on actually creating all the outfit and ship resources, and another on system layout. After that is done, you'll have to have someone really detailing all the spobs in all the systems along with tech and dudes, another doing planet descriptions, and another working on balance and the combat system. Graphics person optional. It kind of limits the number of people that can effectively join togethor.

I've been wanting to do a Star Wars plugin for a long time. I'm not all that active on the boards, but I'm a rabid Star Wars and EV fan so I think I'd be suitable for any sort of job. I'm familiar with ResEdit and the EV:O resources, and I've glanced over the EVN bible.

As for a job, I could do anything but the graphics (unfortunately). I do know someone who is rather adept at 3D, but I'm not sure how interested he is in Star Wars or making a plug-in. If worse comes to worse we could probably leech of something, although I hate to do that. I've got about 35+ Star Wars books, and I've read them all, and if anyone needs me to scan a page in or do research I would happily do so. Also, I think in the interests of fun, the game should start at Episode IV and continue up until VI if the player follows the storyline of the movies. If they deviate, however, a whole new world should open up. I think the cron resource would be GREAT for a universe like Star Wars, and all of the other cool features would make it better than any of the previous plugins.

The thing that irritated me in the previous versions was that so much of it deviated from what I felt would be a true Star Wars galaxy. Things were in the wrong spot (although, admittedly, it is hard to gauge just where things are because it's never really said, but you can get a general idea), characters didn't really do what they would if it was a Lucas-sanctioned project, and the stories didn't seem very compelling. If I were to create one I would want all of these things changed.

I think the most important thing at the moment would be finding a graphics person to work on it, but they are in very short supply. I fiddle around with Strata, but I haven't the talent nor the experience to make anything I would be proud of.

Anyway, thanks for listening to my rant and I hope we can create one of the best EVN, let alone Star Wars, plugs out there.

To clarify my last post, I'm just saying that there are some things that you can't have two people working on at once very easily due to ID problems.

I don't think you will be that interested, but I have quite a good Sci- fi texture (Strata 3d) which I have used for many ships, and is based on the the texture of the Blockade Runner (the start of episode IV). I also have a model file which looks like a ship from star wars (not a particular ship, I'm afraid, it was originaly going to be a Hinwar Behemoth- class carrier in an abandoned plug I was making for EVO) and a paint file- I lost the model in a recent crash- of a laser guided pulse rifle or similar using the same texture.

If you at all interested, mail me at we_want_freedom_@hotmail.com

Well, since this has become the "look at what my plug does" topic, I guess I'll give a progress update on my SW plug. I decided to take advantage of EVO 1.0.2's added features, and I put in an oütf that adds crew to your ship. This may not seem like much, but I changed the ships so that the default crew is the minimum amount you can have, and each ship comes with a certain number of "extra" crew members. For example, the Star Destroyer, which normally would have a crew of 7000, now comes with a crew of 3000, and 40 packages of 100 Crew Members. The advantage of this? I dunno. I guess you could sell them off for a bit of money. I've also worked on my missions. So far I have all Rebel and Empire missions up to the Battle of Endor worked out on paper, and up to the start of A New Hope (Rebels only) in the plug. Just in case you don't know, almost all of my work (except missions) is based off of Kris Hauser's plug, and I kept the graphics and systems unaltered, except for the changes brought on by entering the game a whole 20 years earlier. I may be thinking about moving the systems around, they kinda bother me the way they are now. Again, if anyone wants to help, or offer advice, or get a beta copy of the plug, or anything, just e-mail me at (url="http://"mailto:restorer@pacificnet.net")mailto:restorer@pacificnet.net(/url)restorer@pacificnet.net

If you want to find some graphics you may find them (url="http://"http://www.theforce.net/scifi3d/starwars/sw.html")here(/url). I'd recoomend (url="http://"http://www.swma.net")The Star Wars Modeller's Alliance(/url), but it seems to be down at the moment.

Deepwood, did you include the Battles of Yavin and Endor in your plug? That would seem hard to do, somewhat, given the fact that you could not, with EVO's engine, fly into the Death Star Trench (in "A New Hope") or the Death Star itself (in ROTJ.) Also, if your plug is following the action of the trilogy, how else could you be taken to the Death Star unless the Death Star was a plent you had to land on?

On a thrid note, I think it should be an option (in EVN, with the char resource) to be like Han Solo. Think about it, independant trade pilot (abliet a smuggler), flies a modified warship (outfit shops?), and where else do you think Matt Burch got the idea of major missions begin accepted in bars if not from the Cantina scene in "Star Wars?"

Oh, and Meowx has and X-wing in the "singles" files in its shipyard.

That's all I have to say for now.

God bless,

Actually, I believe with Nova, you could do that. It would take some very clever working about, but I think I even know how to do it.

First, you make the starmap be basically the bottom of the trench (this can only be done in Nova, though). The ship that's to destroy the Death Star would have to jump into another system, or possibly go through a hyper-<something> (I can't remember the name) to the next system in which the Death Star is placed. As well as doing this, there might be a Death Star shďp in the initial system that has tonnes of fighters in it. Then (I'm not sure if this would work; it will if in Nova ships can actually obstruct one another) you put a bunch of stationary ships in the shape of the little buildings and turrets that either do nothing or just shoot at you. After that, you put one ship that is essentially the vent that the proton torpedoes have to go through (though to make sure that the ship had to be close enough, the torpedoes would have to have a limited range). Finally, add a bunch of TIE fighters around it, as well as Darth Vader's TIE fighter somewhere in the mix.

It wouldn't be exact, but there would be pretty much absolutely no way to make it perfect in EV/O/N.

Yeah, I used to visit SWMA until they went down. And the other site would fulfill all my needs and more, if only I had a 3D Modeller that could read 3DS format...

Well, keeping with the EV/EVO tradition, I've made you start out as an independent captain. And since you aren't featured in the official plot of Star Wars (I can prove it, watch Episodes IV thru VI, you won't hear a mention of yourself 😉 ), You don't actually take part in the micro-battles (e.g., the Trench Run, which by the way only 2 or 3 X-Wings survived from), but you do get involved in 'flying cover' and the like.
On the Death Star topic, here's how the Battle of Yavin works: When the Episode IV mission thread starts, the DS appears in the Alderaan system. Right before you have to chase the Millenium Falcon to the Death Star, Alderaan is 'destroyed' (at this time, the Death Star is a spö🆒. Players with high ratings in the Empire will be able to dock at the Death Star. During the Battle of Yavin, the DS disappears from the Alderaan system and is now a shďp in the Yavin system. That's the last time you see it until Endor.
Alrighty, that was enough of an explanation, yes?

In my plug, you start out as Han Solo, a young space captain working for the Hutts on Ylesia. You then realize that things there are wrong, and you streal a ship from them. You run to Correllia, were you sell the ship, and purchase passage on a liner to Curuscant. From there you enter Imperial Academy, and are transported to Carida. You then go through the academy, and become a leiutenant. You are on an ispection tour one day and you see a slave driver beating a wookie(Chewbacca) to death. You ar given the choice of saving him(Imperial->Smuggler->Rebellion) or watching him die(Imperial->Imperial). This is pretty much the first ten missions or so, so don't let it out. I plan on using a heavy amount of ncbs to do this. This storyline is from Ann Crispins books. Well anyway, she wrote three books covering Han Solo being a little kid to becoming the character we know today. I would prefer it if you didn't use this storyline, because my plug may not come out for a year after Nova comes out, and by then it may not seem original if you use it. This plug will also use some clips from the movies to help the storyline along. I will edit the Death Star Run sequence and playing that for that part of the story. The Imperial storyline is going to be vewry hard, but I will figure it out. I think maybe we all should make ourselves an ezboard where we can help eachother out. Anyone else think this is a good idea?

I also forgot to mention: to fill in what happens during the 'micro-battles' featured in the movies, I've included movie clips such as the Trench Run as soon as you finish the Battle of Yavin, the evacuation of Hoth after you finish that mission, and the full clip from the Battle of Endor (a full 5 to 10 minutes; optional, of course).
