Just one problem: Where does the judge draw the line between the best of one category and the worst of the next? No, what category a given image goes into must be determined by the images creator. And if someone enters something in, say, advanced, and then realizes that the entry can't compete then (s)he should be allowed to take it down to intermediate (assuming that the due date for submitting entries hasn't passed). The only real problem comes if someone enters in a lower category than they should, and I'd like to think that most people here are honest enough not to do that on purpose, and/or change the category they entered in if appropriate.

That too is a good point, but you could level the same argument at the issue of where the judge draws the line as to what is the best image and what is the second best image.
It seams to me that the judge is already making hierarchical decisions, ann as such is more than capable of deciding weather an image is of beginner - et al - standard.
Anyway, 's just a thought, like. I'm sure Mr.Zombat knows what he's doing, and his opinion is worth listening to <points to AZ's collected works on the EV Image Board>

I'm going to post my graphic here. It's in Infini-D and I guess it would go into the Intermediate Category. It's called the Independent Frigate. To get it all said and done I think it was 8 hours. ok...Jeez...I was gone for 1 day, and BAM! 26 posts to 48!! Jeez! Ok, some of you are not getting the point about some things. When you post your image, it can be at most 3 images, of the SAME thing...I only have a 28.8k, and I dont want to look through a big huge array of pics. Also, you <b>Must</b> tell If its Advanced/beginners, etc, and the program used. I need to know theese things. Another thing: If you post it and say its a beginners thing, and its actually something thats quite intermediate or advanced, i will notify you and move it up however many spaces. If you enter something beginning for an advanced category, then thats your own problem...Im not going to move it down for you.

Here's my two cents: First of all, I think that skill level and program used should supplement an entry, but the contest shoulnd't necessarily be categorized as such.
For instance, say you choices for skill level are beginner, intermediate, and advanced. Then the contest should have a top prize for intermediate, and soforth. Additionally, there should be a "zombat's overall bestest of the best uber l33t pic of the solar eclipse" or something. You know, the "best in show" sort of thing.
Since it is a judged contest rather than a vote-in one, we'll all have to trust the Admiral's good judgement on what is quality and what needs work. But then, a lot of highly-respected contests are just the same.
And, though AZ himself hasn't said either way on this, I think that it would be good to categorize the ships by their respective class...i.e. freighter, fighter, capital ship, and soforth. 2d images and multi-ship scenes should be in a different class, as that's not only ship design but artistic interpretation and compositional skill.

As for the ship categorys...its inefficient...I would have like, 50 categorys for each program, plus the intermediate/beginner/advanced part. even having the levels and just the ship categorys would still not be ethical (at least to me)
I've remade my graphic a little bit...I've just added a couple things...it's the same one just a little different.

I agree about the categories...I think that there should just be beginner, intermediate, advanced, and 2d (no sub-categories).
