The R&R; Editors & Mac OS X

Does anyone know if the almightly R&R; editors for EV Nova will be made OS X native, or will OS X people have to run them under the classic 9.1 OS? If its the latter, how well do they run under OS X's classic mode? Or will there be both classic and a carbonized versions?

Thanks in advance for any who can answer; though I'm aware no one may know yet.....perhaps I will get lucky and DrRalph will see this. 😉

The editors run under ResEdit, so they are Classic-only because ResEdit is.

NovaTools run inside ResEdit. They work on any colour mac from system 7.0 to OSX, becasue they run in ResEdit.
They run great in OSX under classic, and I use them under OSX and OS 9.1 all the time.

There are no plans for a Carbon version - there really is no need. That said, ResKnife (which does come in a crabon version) might be able to host the NovaTools with a bit of work, but there are no plans immediately for that.

Hey, they are free!

Cheers
DrRalph

PS Beta testing is wel underway, and goign reasonably well 🙂

Ralph, I was wondering if you could give me the URL for missionwrite? I can't seem to find it anywhere.

Also, why does Dr.Ralph have only 3 karma? He is making the Nova Tools and in my book that makes him blessed. 🙂

Thanks, but MisnWrite I can't find on that page. It used to be there. What happened to it?

Because karma is something given to people who present and act as good webboard citizens. Someone could be making the w00tRalphTools, and be a complete A S S, and have a negative 5 karma. Being someone who's making some neet tool doesn't mean you are entitled to be a moderator, and have your karma be blessed.
SO I 😛 ON YOU!

Just tell me what you'd like and I'll put it there. There are no limitations, there are no boundries, there are no rules. (Well, I probably can't get it to make your coffee ;))

Seriously, though...how is ResKnife shaping up, Nick? When do you expect to reach version 1.0? Thanks.

Excellent! There are a couple of 'features' in the ResEdit API that I'd love to be able to modify, as long as it doesn't wreck the stability of ResKnife in anyway.

When things are settled, as I said on the Nova board, let's talk then.

Thanks

The API I have in place in ResKnife right now has grown out of a collaboration with Uli Kusterer (who was writing Resurrection). He has, however, put that project on ice, probably for ever. Although I do not implement the ResEdit API, I did toy with the idea of creating a shim through to the nearest equivalent, and even looked seriously at supporting RSSC editors, but it proved both to be too much of a hassle and limited what I could do with Carbon & OS X. As such the API has remained internal, being extended as I see fit and on a need-it-now basis. Having another person to comment on it would be very useful.

The whole project is documented using HeaderDoc, so I can generate documentation whenever you request it (note, this is only for the Classic/Carbon version).

Regarding stability, the Cocoa version has the folowing known bugs:

  1. Does not ask to save on Quit
  2. Does not check if resource type is exactly four bytes long (it's an NSString)
  3. Has no editors yet (I've just started on it!) nor an API. I have looked at CFPlugin, but it's horrible! Where's (NSPlugin loadPlugInNamed:@"Hex Editor" owner:self) when you want it?

The Carbon version has the following bugs:

  1. I'm not matching every file open with a close, as such, when you come to save, FSpExchangeFiles() swaps the files but I then cannot delete the old one!
  2. The template editor it only partly complete.
  3. Crashes occasionally for no known reason, eek!
  4. Lots of other things I can't remember right now.

I updated the Version History of my (url="http://"http://nickshanks.com/resknife/")ResKnife page(/url) with some other bugs in my current builds.

When you're ready to chat (like, after the rush has died down), just email me.

Currently it has a hexadecimal editor, which works very well, and about half a template editor, which—when complete—will support Resourcerer templates too.
It also has a PICT viewer, but that isn't anything special.

Currently, you can:

  1. Create and delete resources.
  2. Edit resource name, ID, type** and attributes (except 'compressed').
  3. Edit the resource contents in hexadecimal.
  4. Edit the resource contents in a template as long as the template doesn't contain:
    a) repeating elements
    🆒 H xxx , C xxx or P0 xx field types
    c) Resourcerer-only types (like CASE)

Also, most of the foundation for supporting data-fork based resources is present, but there's a small bug which prevents the file being opened in the first place! Once I've nailed that, you should be able to save to the data or resource fork as you choose.

Any more questions?
