Metaballs in strata are used to create realistic looking organic shapes by grouping sphere like shapes together
To create a metaball shape simply create more than one shpherical shape and place them almost next to each other, Then highlight both shapes an click on the metaball icon on the floating pallete and it will create a metaball shape This will only work with spheres although you can make them any length and width wou like

That ship is mostly made using metaballs, though in POV-Ray rather than Strata. Specifically, the basic head shape, the body, and the wing membranes were all made using metaballs.
