Do the sounds in EV/O have to be 11kHz? every time I have them higher they simply don't work. And the sounds I have sound REALLY bad at 11kHz. If 11 is the only way, how do I make them sound better?

I believe so. Nova, however, supports higher quality sounds.

Okay then. How do I make my sounds sound better?
I don't think I'll find this in the EV bible, however.
Sorry, I don't think you can make your EV(O) sounds sound better, because Ambrosia_sound_tool requires 11kHz sounds. The problem arised for me when I went to Maelstrom 1.4.3 and I wanted to use my alternate sound sets for 1.0.1, and as I do no longer have SoundEdit pro, I can't downgrade them and I still use Maelstrom 1.0.1 for these alternate sound files.

Then why is the startup music at 22kHz?!

The startup music in EV and EVO is played through (url="http://"http://gemma.apple.com/techpubs/mac/Sound/Sound-93.html")SndStartFilePlay(/url) which is separate from the Ambrosia sound library that's used for the in-game effects.
EV Nova uses a much improved Ambrosia sound library that can handle sounds of varying types, sample rates, and compression ratios. The startup music in EV Nova is also played through QuickTime so it can be any audio file which QuickTime can understand.
